Exactly what? Those old VWs are still slow even though they don't have "fluffy" (read: comfortable) seats and didn't weigh much. BTW, they did have some chrome, probably more than most new cars have!
if one gets their info from mags and not experience...
well...
ahh...
it is no use with this one.
You really are in denial!
Anyone who thinks that the '50s-'70s VW Beetle (along with the Bus) are not underpowered must be comparing their power output to a lawn mower!
I have observed how slow they are. When I was in the unfortunate position of being behind them. Their engines are making all sorts of noise trying to keep up with traffic (usually failing) and I pass them, as do the other motorists.
You do realize that the top speed of those things are in the 70 and 80 mph bracket? My cars can do that in 2nd gear!
Look dude, they made some 25 million of those engines over 65 years. Give the thing its due and move on.
All that means is that 25 million underpowered engines were made!
There are other engines just as rugged (like the Mopar slant-six and Ford six-cylinder) but you don't have to worry about being rear-ended when going up a freeway on-ramp.
My buddy's '68 could dang near keep up to my '78 Rabbit with just an after market muffler, so less than 10 seconds for sure.
But, that is beside the point. The engine is a great engine that is has lasted the test of time.
Where is your beloved 500 ci Cadillac motor now?
