Toss up between the 7.3 Powerstroke and the old 5.9 12v Cummins....with the Powerstroke you had a great motor in a decent truck, with the Cummins you had a GREAT motor in a teetotal POS.

yeah I never understood how dodge has the cummings and terrible tranny's
and chevy has a terrible diesel's but the allison tranny. I mean a truck that hooks a cummings diesel to a allison transmission would a great seller with great durablilty.

You ain't kidding...I've always wondered that too...and why oh why did Cummins sell to Dodge exclusively.....I've owned a few and the trucks are total junk, but you can't kill the engines......PLUS you can hot rod the hell out of a Cummins CHEAP!!!

Mopar 318 had a long successful run. I never put less than 150K on a number of them, and never had any engine troubles.

You can't go wrong with the small block chevy. You can get it any version you would like from a mild 350 putting out under 200 hp or the high reving 327 screamer especially from the 60's Vettes to the 383 torque monster. It is an affordable engine to build on top of that. There are some NASCAR engine builders that are charging less than 6000 for small blocks tested at around 600 hp with close to 600 lb/ft of torque. The new 427 chevy builds is a nice motor, but you couldn't touch one for less than 10-12,000.

I always liked the chevy 327 cu in small blocks. I modern engine I like the 350 cu in chevys with the throttle body injection because they were so simple really.

Ford 302/351

Chevy Small Block V8s

Cadillac Big Blocks V8s

12V Cummins

GM 3800

Honestly though, it is probably the Chevy Small Blocks most notably the 305 and 350 that will go down in history as the best engines ever forged by man... if they ever DO go down, there's millions upon millions of those things.

300 inline 6. Ford got it right with that engine. I am not a fan of the GM small block. GM manufactured several of them, I guess there is a difference between quantity and quality. They are not a bad engine by any means but there are better options.

I also really like the Ford Modular engines. I really like the engine.

The 318 is an excellent mill too.

Both had NV4500 and 5600 available gear boxes though. I just had my 4500 apart for 5th nut failure prevention.... they are pretty meaty transmissions, the 5600 even more so.
