sure you can go back.. some even mix the two and experiences no problem at all. the only difference between the two is that Synthetics are just made by man not nature so they don't contain the flaws that lead to breakdown of viscosity and thermal sludging found in conventional oils.

No, you can't go back to Standard Oil. They changed their name to Amoco years ago and have since been bought out by BP.

Hope this helps!

Jay, there are 2 different transmissions in these trucks- the NV3500 and the NV4500. They use different fluids. Which one do you have?

In motor oils, you can swap back and forth between synthetic and conventional all you want these days. That's mostly because there are few full conventionals on the market anymore. Most are blends now and if it wears any Ford specs on the bottle, its a blend or a synthetic. You might also want to know that oils that didn't qualify as a synthetic are now being sold as one. The synthetic based oils now can be defined as a way to drain the consumer of his money. There are very few real synthetics on the market anymore despite advertising.

On a related note -- I have been using synthetic oil with extended life filters. Change intervals at about 6 to 7k miles. If I do have to stick with synthetic, is this an ok strategy, or is it better to do standard oil with 3k intervals?
Sure you can flip back to mineral oil just be sure to use standard oil filters since extended life filters might plug using mineral oils as it thickens due to increasing mileage as it gets dirty from use.

short answer - yes
long answer - why? what do you gain? It is cheaper to use quality synth oil, like Amsoil, and extended mileage oil filter, like Mobil1, that is rated to 15K miles normal conditions, and do filter swap at 10-12K and run oil into 20K? As it's guaranteed for 25K? Instead of going back to sub quality and function oil and do changes every 3-5K?
Do your math. Oh, and do your OWN oil changes. Sure, it's expensive to give it to a "I don't care about your car" Quicklube fella.
