Not a bad contraption. I wonder how much it will vary from concept to production. Id still rather have that cool little Volvo hatch though (I forget its name).
My answer is, why not? So many models have bloated their way out of their original market segment that the company has nothing to fill the bottom segment any more. This is no different than BMW offering the 1-series to fill the gap that the 3-series bloated itself out of, or Nissan offering the Versa to fill the gap the Sentra bloated itself out of, or Honda offering the Fit to fill the gap the Civic bloated itself out of, etc. Price bloat has also been an issue, so it doesn't hurt to offer a model to regain a segment they lost because they priced their models out of reach of, say, a fresh white-collar banker who wants something a little flashier than a Ford Fusion but can't afford a 9-3. Better to get them into your brand now so you already have them when they're ready to go up-market.

C30. And I'll take the Saab any day if it offers the 260HP turbo four that other Delta-platform cars already have.
