And used to bring false charges against people. When some authorities found there was no law with which they could charge some nitwit shining a laser at airplanes with they charged him under The Patriot Act. Count me as 'agin giving government free reign to bring cahrges for anything they don't happen to like.

to address the OP's original question......yes, in looking over teeny tiny cars(which we could do with for a 2nd car), we took size/safety against larger vehicles into consideration.
I've opted to stick with my Outback as a good compromise of safety, general usabilty(hauling & 4WD) and gas mileage of 24.5
Hate the thought of being in the littlest thing on the road
But, we don't expect anybody else to change their choices for our comfort level.

i am not a big fan of regulations and laws but very few people seem to be concerned about "big brother" so while every useless proposal is on the table maybe it's time for one which would actually make a difference:
all vehicles(truck, semis, suv's, sedans) of a certain weight should be subject to a national speed limit. there are 2 spinoffs here. the heaviest cars are (in most cases, not every case) to a larger degree responsible for our oil addiction and by them driving slower we could significantly reduce demand.
the second reason is to protect drivers in smaller cars. there are many people out there who would be more than happy to drive a corolla over an excursion. the problem is that many feel less safe and end up buying the gas guzzler therefore creating a vicious circle!

My sister and brother in law who have 2 little girls agree with you and have SUVs due to that they live like an hour from me.
I have a Cooper live in South Florida if I had kids I wouldnt have it because of what you stated safety reasons.
I am heading out now and like every time hope I make it back lol kidding but its true the bigger cars/Suvs give you way more safety.
Many here are horrid drivers but the SUVs will cut you off much more ask small car owners . SUV drivers wont agree but small car drivers will.
However I believe in a speed limit for all not different limits for different vehicles problem is its not enforced not in South Florida it isnt.
What is considered agressive driving in other states and dealt with here its normal so yes if you have kids for safety reasons an SUV is a good idea.
Think 2 or 3 yrs in row we are rated the most rude drivers but with the inept politicians we have it makes sense.

If they wind up in Gitmo they will wait yrs for a "trial" if found not guilty they will still rot there its up to the Presidents discretion.
When we had the torture we had in Iraq few yrs back . A few low ranking soldiers were found guilty yet the officers and civilians sent there by CIA who they "reported to" walked away than there is something real wrong going on.

I got rid of a 30 mpg + subcompact and now drive a 20 city/27 hwy Volvo out of fear. And I still have to worry about getting in a head on collision with a behemoth, because its wheels will probably come right up over the hood of my car and come smashing through my windshield.
Yeah, America, land of the free. We're all free to drive around in 3-ton trucks, ain't it grand?

There is if conservation of resources is truly the purpose, otherwise it's just a revenue producing speed taz.

The most obvious flaw in this logic is that weight isn't the only factor in MPG.
My extremely large (by today's standards) 4-door, 8 cyl sedan gets better mileage than many cars 2/3 to 1/2 its size -- e.g., Toyota Camry, "Mini" Cooper, many others.
I wouldn't mind semis being subject to a lower national limit as they are in some European countries, just for safety reasons. This does impact traffic flow though - on a 2 lane highway you can end up with the right lane solidly packed with slow-moving trucks while all cars must stay to the left if they want to stay out of the way of trucks and/or pass.
