which wild assumptions? are you saying that "safety" is not a consideration when purchasing a car?

Nice attempt to put words in my mouth and skate around the question, but I'm not biting.
Again, do you have any stats to back up your claims that people are driving SUV's (and avoiding smaller, more fuel efficient cars) out of fear for their safety??

you seem to be avoiding the fact that many people believe they are safer driving a large vehicle than a small one!

5 Reasons Why People Buy SUVs
and no i don't have any stats! do they even have stats on the reasons people choose large vehicles over small ones? instead i use my brain, a little common sense and i speak to people. safety is a concern for many people when purchasing a vehicle. large cars/suv's/trucks are deemed by many to be safer. therefore it would be reasonable to deduce that many people buy large suv's because they're considered safer.

You seem to have a distinct lack of evidence to back up your assumptions.

Most people buy an SUV because they can. It may not truly fit any of their needs, but it fulfills their wants. We Americans are in love with our cars. We appreciate good styling, and SUVs are currently in vogue.

It seems that this debate has run its course. I've got to fire up my SUV and grab some lunch. Clear the streets; panic and mayhem will most certainly prevail as soon as the econo-cars see me coming.

This reminds me of Looney Tunes.
I am not a fan of SUVs by any means. Why does every idiot with an SUV feel the need to pull forward at stop signs and lights. I know damn well they can see over other cars, whereas I can't see past them. Same for tailgating. Why do you think sitting on my rear bumper is going to get you anywhere faster? If you would bother to look past my car you will see a non-stop line of more vehicles. Where are going to be in line if I can even pull over, which I can't do most of the time because there's another SUV to my right that is not about to let me over. Every one of you that does these things is an inconsiderate jerk.
That said, there has to be logic (and at least a modicum of common sense and consistency) in laws passed regarding speed limits.
This idea has no merit and is dangerous at best. Dropping limits for large vehicles only places them in the slow lane, which is the entry lane. I would prefer not having to merge with a non-stop line of semis and SUVs.
A surcharge on gas consumption is a good idea, though. Every tax added results in those vehicles that gulp gas paying for the luxury. As many have said in these forums. "Hey, if I can afford it, I'm going to drive it." And I am one that has said it. Well, if we can afford it, then we can't complain if we're asked to belly up to the bar for the privilege to drive low mileage vehicles. And, yes it is a privilege, not a right.
Truckers should be exempt as that just adds costs to transportation of goods as opposed to transportation of empty space.
Tap, tap, tap, tap....
I'm waiting.
