In my experience, poor drivers pilot everything from a Prius to a Hummer. You probably just notice the ones in the Hummer more.

That said, there has to be logic (and at least a modicum of common sense and consistency) in laws passed regarding speed limits.

This idea has no merit and is dangerous at best. Dropping limits for large vehicles only places them in the slow lane, which is the entry lane. I would prefer not having to merge with a non-stop line of semis and SUVs.

A surcharge on gas consumption is a good idea, though. Every tax added results in those vehicles that gulp gas paying for the luxury. As many have said in these forums. "Hey, if I can afford it, I'm going to drive it." And I am one that has said it. Well, if we can afford it, then we can't complain if we're asked to belly up to the bar for the privilege to drive low mileage vehicles. And, yes it is a privilege, not a right.

Truckers should be exempt as that just adds costs to transportation of goods as opposed to transportation of empty space.

Tap, tap, tap, tap....

I'm waiting.
the problem is that as a country we can no longer afford it. our trade deficit and debt are huge and growing. at some point we'll no longer be able to write anymore iou's.

the thing is that my suggestion is simple to monitor. in many places semis have their own speed limitspasted on the back of the vehicle. they do this because tptb recognise that their size and lack of agility present a hazzard to other road users. the same thing can be said for suv and truck drivers!

regarding semis though, they esp should be subject to the speed limit. they present the biggest danger and their vehicles use the most gas.

Flair for the dramatic, huh? As you've obviously discovered, it's much easier to use scare tactics than it is to research facts in order to prove a point. Power to the sheeple!

Your typical driver in an SUV is already paying more in taxes than they should be, because they're using gas and ethanol instead of diesel. Since the tax is imposed per gallon of fuel, and diesels get better fuel economy, the people using diesel are taxed less per mile driven.

Ok, now you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Growing trade deficit??? Not last time I checked. Cheap dollar makes for a LOT more exports.

Semi drivers are slowing down all across the country. It's not because they're dangerous, it's because they must work hard to manage the best fuel economy possible in order to survive. You could raise the speed limit to 90 mph if you wanted to, but any trucking company that wants to stay in business longer than 30 days will still have trucks running along at approximately 60 mph.

so the deficit shrinks for a month or two after decades of growing and that's the crisis averted? the reality is that it's still sitting at around $60billion a month. then there's the debt! i don't know so much about the semi drivers. from what i see it's business as usual

It was bound to happen eventually.

I disagree about it presenting the bigger danger (in my opinion). I worry more about the driver darting all around through traffic than anything else. More often than not, that driver is behind the wheel of something smaller than my SUV.

they're actually called "wake up and see what's happening" tactics. the sheeple are the ones who refuse to see what their excess consumption is doing to the country

Can you explain your correllation between the price of oil and our trade deficit?

I do know so much about semi drivers. I can tell you with absolute certainty that they are either slowing down or going out of business (both drivers and companies). It's an economic necessity in this business.
