I had my eye on the Polo since living in Spain several years ago.
Not sure how good the mileage is on the Diesel Polo, but I think it is ~ 70mpg.
In the meantime I'm trying to make a 75mpg Diesel Scirocco (mk1 or mk2)
I think I can do it for under $1000, including a rebuilt engine (I'm gonna use an early 1.5). Today I'm working on my 1986 GTD (eurospec TurboDiesel GTI, not available in USA or Canada) So far I'm into it $550. The last one only got 42-44 mpg, but probably cuz it was so much fun to run it hard and fast. I will try to get this one over 50mpg.
I have a friend in Canada with a diesel SMART car, but he doesn't get any better mileage than my 'Stealth' Rabbit ($500), but at least it fits crossways behind the cab of his Volvo Semi. The US version is too long to do that (Extra large crash bumpers, so I hear)
I don't think you will see the USA get too many diesels, tho there will be more than currently available. You kinda need to have a 'passion' for diesel, USA typical high volume consumer does not have that. I was weaned on the smokestack of a tractor ~ 16 hrs / day, so I have to have a snort of diesel smoke to get going in the morning.
