insurance question
I am 25 years old and I am looking to get car insurance on my own for the first time.
I never had the need until now to purchase my own insurance. I was on my parents' during college and I drove a company car after I graduated.
I have been transferred to a position that requires me to drive my own car. My parents are allowing me to drive their car until I am able to purchase my own. They live in Texas and my job is in N.C.
I know nothing about car insurance. How does it work if you drive a car that you do not own? Do my parents end their coverage on the vehicle and then do I purchase insurance on my own? Is it that simple?
Thanks for the help.

The laws vary from state to state but I'm pretty sure that you'll have to be on your parents' insurance for as long as you do not own your own car. When you get insurance, the liability coverage will cover you in any car you drive... but when you buy insurance, you insure a car and person combination, not just a person. When you buy your own car, you'll be able to buy insurance of your own. I have never heard of someone having car insurance without having first gotten a car... however, it may be a good question for an insurance agent instead of a clueless dude like me.

I will be driving this car for at least a year. I'm not sure if my parents will insure a child that is 25 and lives away from home. Could they just cancel their insurance on the car and have me get insurance on it? I'm calling an agent tommorow. thanks.

They could do this only if the car were to be titled and registered in your name.

That's not necessarily true. It depends upon where you live. Call an insurance agent.
