Your roommate may have left it unlocked without your permission, but you left it locked and fulfilled your duty of due diligence. Just don't volunteer that you gave your roommate permission to move it.

The insurance should cover it.....but you'll have to weigh whether the used value of the bag is worth the increase in premiums.

Car insurance usually won't cover the theft of incidental items from a car, such as a briefcase. It will usually only cover damage to the vehicle itself and/or theft of its components such as the stereo head unit. You're probably SOL on this one.

Um, I think it's $500? I went to the police station tonight and reported it... they took all the details, and gave me a case number for reference. He also suggested calling the social security administration & my bank, since it's possible they got personal info from my paystubs (in the briefcase). Yikes. I'm probably not going to call my insurance company, especially considering the ticket they're going to hear about - LOL. On a related note, does anyone know if my insurance will go up if I do traffic school?

The whole point of going to traffic school is to keep the incident off your driving abstract, which is what insurance companies use to determine your insurance rate.
