My parents bought my first car for me and my sisters (3 of us all within one year of each other) to share once we were of age to drive. It was an old Volvo (88?). It drove like a tank but it was extremely safe. My first accident (not my fault) the driver in the car that hit me totaled his car, I drove the Volvo away with barely a dent in the bumper. I may not have had the coolest car in High School, but now I appreciate the choice in car my parents had made. (safety first)
My second car was a Nissan Altima. My parents paid for half as a high school graduation present (with the stipulation that i had to have a summer job). It was about 9K. I loved that car.
Now I drive a Trailblazer. Bought 100% by me! yay! Not sure how I ever managed without it. Perfect for snowboarding trips.
I'd recommend going with something safe at first. She has plenty of time to work for her dream car.
you for that type of money could get an almost new Honda fit, which is a cool car
with good gas and many safety features. The Civic also is good, but is pricey, as the accord. The element also, is so ugly it is cool
and has lots of room to cart thinks around in. I think she would love the honda fit.

Buy an old Toyota Corolla. My older son drives 1999 Toyota Corolla LE and it's got more than 225,000 miles (he bought it used in 2002), still going strong and gas mileage is still OK.
Just an update...we/she chose a 1997 Mercedes. It is older but only has 55K miles on it. In great shape and only driven locally. As we were looking at cars a friend of ours told us his mother was getting rid of it as she no longer is able to drive. (sounds too good to be true but it is.) Our daughter took one look and she was sold. We had it checked out by a shop and everything is in perfect shape. We spent $6500. on it so we are left with some college money for her. Thanks for everyone's input!
Get an '02 or '03 Pontiac Vibe. People think they are Pontiacs and don't realize the internals are entirely Toyota Matrix (Corolla wagon) so it may be a little cheaper than the Toyota twin. 26 mpg city, 31 mpg highway IME, with the automatic.
We have put 105k on our '05 without a single repair. Only oil changes, air filters and one front brake job. I'm getting ready to change the belt, spark plugs and rear brake shoes for the first time.
Toyota or Honda, any model. I work at a bodyshop, I see the differences. Nothing Domestic in that price range will last. And go ahead and boot out Nissan, Kia, Hyundai, Daewoo, VW, Mazda, etc.
Add Scion to the must have models, made by Toyota and I'm on my second.
This was my first scion, 60mph into a Jeep Cherokee that ran a red light. My two year old, and my wife were with me. Damage didn't even touch the front doors.
Nice wheels. What kind are they? How was the gas mileage & ride? I'm thinking of getting one & converting to electric at some point.
