Public car auctions will obtain dlr cars...some Repos and the like or in some case a consignment from a private party who needs to unload a vehicle for whatever reason.
Secret is to know the mechanics of a car or have a mechanic go with you to insure a good buy. Steve

i tried the 2 main auctioneers here. it was a no go and i can normally swindle my way into anything. i was told that i needed a dealer license. how bad could that be i thought. wow! fingerprints, insurance, commercial property, plates and like everything these days you have to pass a test! free trade? it's more like the soviet union!

There are some year Corvettes that are fairly inexpensive. A friend sold his 91 Vette roadster a year ago. It had a 6 speed and the variable suspension. Red with black interior and top. 68k miles. $11k. I thought about it but wanted more than 2 seats. Went for a 71 Cutlass convertible instead....

i was suggesting a corvette because 58 robbo was looking at getting a boxster or z4. i think a vet is a great car at a lesser price. i'd suggest to 58robo to at least drive one before buying his z4, boxster etc.

All and all a POS. What I'd love to find is a low mileage '03 7.3 liter or at my wifes insistance a Chevy duramax. Thankfully I still have the auction contact who will take me whenever I want to go for the cost of gas/hotel since he's not going much these days. He did say the last time he went newer trucks were going cheap and the old/cheaper stuff was getting expensive since most around here were dumping the vehicles they owe on and buying beaters for cash, no payments.
I'm on the fence whether I want any payments yet since I don't see the light at the end of the tunnel economy wise as of yet.
Personally I don't see any issue with having an auction contact, just like having a butcher, fish monger, doctor friend etc. Heck I've even got a pharmacist contact and don't pay retail for that either. It's all about who you know. I look at it like this, I fix my friends computers and printers for cost of parts and they return the favor, up here friends do for each other as that's what keeps all our heads above water.

No prob ol'buddy.
I agree with you,if I could find a decent mileage 7.3 around here for the right price,I'd snag it in a heartbeat too.I know there were reasons behind dropping it's production, but that was the worst mistake Ford has ever made in their truck lineup.I've had several both stock and highly modified and imho, they are just the best things ever built.....Did you have any turbo internal trouble with your 6.0,such as seizing up????
The earlier Duramax was total junk, but there are some guys on here who are having really good luck with the later models and seem really tickled to death with them.I don't know when they changed to the better ones, but several on here could help with the model years I'm sure.
I'm the same as you on riding the fence about buying a newer truck....They are cheap as can be right now,but with the economy being so uncertain and the fact that my older 4x4 cc dually is still running great (except a slight problem that's going to get bigger with a 4th gear syncronizer scratching a bit going into gear...I'm going to try syncromesh from GM and see if it helps first before having it torn into ) I imagine I'll just keep what I have for awhile.I've looked at some late model 4x4 cc dually Chevs and GMCs,but I asked around on here about the 8.1 and was advised by many current owners to stay away due to horrendous fuel mileage.I like the looks and the way the GMs ride and drive, but I'm just not a GM diesel fan.If Ford gets that new CAT motor I keep hearing rumours about I'll wait a few years until I can afford a used one (ten years is more like it ) and snag one of those.I've tried Dodge several times and love the Cummins, but it is a diamond shoved down in a horse turd, the Dodge trucks are nothing but scrap iron imo and I've had no luck with one since I sold my '91.....
I recently sold my backhoe and welders and we've changed businesses and I'm not really sure(if everything works out ok ) that I'm going to even need these huge trucks anymore....I may be able to drop back down to a 1/2ton 4x2 for the first time since 1986....Those newer SS Silverado's look super sharp and I REALLY like the look of the F-150 ext cab flairside.
I can buy a 3/4 4x4 in rough condition for dirt cheap around here to use to haul my firewood and feed out of and put a bale spear in the back of it.I could save my fuel money driving the 1/2 ton as a daily driver. That's kinda the hope I have right now.Just have to see how the grocery biz goes..Just call me "Mr Olsen" from "Little House on the Prairie"
As far as helping each other out and trading work goes,we are blessed in this area the same way....I take my backhoe and bury a horse or cow for a guy and he comes along in the spring and breaks and tills my garden etc etc...no money changes hands and we are both happy. With the way things are today, that's about the only way to survive.Heck,it may get better one day tho' or at least I hope it does

I never had the turbo go but that's probably because I got rid of it at less than 25k miles. I don't "need" a truck right now for hauling but more for physical reasons as it's easy for me to get in and out of. I'm also looking a couple years down the road at getting a 5th wheel to start traveling and figure now is the time to get a cheap diesel truck as long as it's low milage, eventually they'll rebound in price and I don't want to pay 50k. I like fords but hate the motors (new) and chevy has the best interiors IMO but I don't know enough about the duramax yet. Dodges, well you hit it on the head with your description, not to mention riding in them is like riding on a park bench (seat wise) when compared to the ford or chevy. My last 7.3 had a supertuner and 4 inch turbo back exhaust so it'd get up and go and was very reliable as well as getting 18-21 mpg.
I know that there's still some low milage 7.3's out there, I just need to find one.

I'd say you are right about buying one now.If I had to go buy a new 1 ton 4x4 cc,I really don't know what I would get...I don't see a good "all around" package out there anymore since the demise of the 7.3 and I'm afraid no matter what I purchased I would end up very disappointed and sick about it.
I'm the same as you too on the ease of getting in and out of a truck.I'm a fairly decent sized fellow and just about hate riding in cars unless it's just to play around a bit. I hope I can scale back my truck size before to much longer and go with a much lighter duty, better riding, handling one with better mpg.
I'm lusting after either one of these puppies right now,but I'll have to wait a while longer I'm afraid.

The important thing that many people who have a TURBO do not realize is that the oil has to "BE CHANGED OFTEN". Oil is circulated to the central main bearing between the impellers to keep it cool under "BOOST" conditions. Lack of a clean oil will cost $$$$ to rebuild the unit.
I change my oil and filter every 1500-2000 mile...cheap expense for an expensive part.
I have rebuilt a turbo on my own (mechanic) so know what can happen. Steve

Steve, I think the main thing people don't know/realize is they buy all these turbo boost boxes or load up their rig and think they can just go out and romp it like a gasser without worry. They don't have a boost gauge or Pyrometer, they don't add bigger exhaust and wonder why the turbo blows out. I've had quite a few friends ask me why the yellow boost light on their fords come on while they're going up hill with it to the floor. Oil is critical but so is temp. Once you overheat the blades they straighten out and your done.
