How come small cars 10-12 years ago have better mpg ratings than newer small cars?

You don't need power as long as everyone else around doesn't have it...but in today's world alot of them do...even in the name of little 4 cylinder engines, and you'll get yourself ran over if you don't move fast enough.

Sorry but that's American society as a rule...the bigger the better.
