I backed up into the side of a pole and now have ugly burnt orange paint all over the side of my black car. There is a five inch vertical scratch on the side that the pole created, the scratch isn't super obvious but it looks tacky when you notice it. So I'm wondering what can I do to fix this? And in general how much will it cost? And are there any ways I can fix it on my own without taking it to the dealership or car repair shop?
Take it to a detailer, it should buff out, depending. Sometimes wax even removes light paint smears. It really all depends how bad the situation is. Got any pics?
Get some fine buffing compound and a clean terry cloth towel. Wet the towel so it is damp then dip it in the fine buffing compound and gentely rub the paint off. Be carefull not to get to carried away.
If you don't know much about car polishing and waxing, this is probably not the best place for you to take your first step - probably you are better off with an experienced professional detailer. You didn't say if there is any denting, but if there is you can probably find a paintless dent repair guy who can fix this.
The real art of this is knowing if you can clean the paint up completely, or if you have to leave a little of the scratch in place to avoid cutting the paint too thin. This takes a specific touch and experience helps.
It's possible your dealer has such a detailer, but you will pay less by dealing with the detailer directly.
It a detailer can't get it, and it has to be painted, figure on a minimum of $500.00 to do it right. If the whole side of the car needs to be paints, it will be a lot more... You can't just paint a small area, it has to be blended in.
The entire fender, or perhaps the entire half of the car needs to be painted.
If it's in the door, the whole door needs to be painted, fender, same thing, etc, etc.....
Wife had a similar incident a little while ago. While attempting to park in the garage, she hit the side of one of the cabinets and luckily there's no scratch, but there is a white streak of cabinet paint on the siding. How can I remove that?
