Walmart Oil Changes (moved from TN forum)
I was at Walmart yesterday for a basic $19.99 oil change. The Walmart employee told me these budget oil changes use "recycled" oil and pushed me to upgrade to a more expensive package. I've never heard of anyone using "recycled" oil for an oil change. Is this true, or just a scam to get us to upgrade to a more expensive oil change??
Thanks.

More than likely it is not recycled but re-refined oil. It is oil that has been used but sent back re purified and new additives added.

Any oil they use should meet the API service rating which would meet your cars specs.

ive always had my old chevy's oil changed at walmart back in the day, i knew the guys that worked there and they always treated my car with respect. I am an avid quaker state oil fan and always made sure thats what they put in the engine. Never had any problems and they are pretty cheap. I would never get oil thats not a name brand just for my piece of mind - unless i did some research on it to see what it contains.

How do they afford to profit if it is $20? Changing my oil myself costs about the same just for the Oil and Filter.

NEVER in my vehicles, ufic.
I am a firm believer in good clean oil changed frequently (never more than 3k miles) plus a quality oil filter are necessary for engine performance and long life.

WalMart has a lot more bargaining power with suppliers than you have.....
Suppliers call WalMart the "category killer" for that reason.

The re-refined oil wouldn't bother me...I believe Nascar uses it.
The reason I wouldn't do it is, with Wally's rock bottom wages, they have to hire anybody with a pulse.
I don't want my drain plug/oil pan stripped or damage from picking the car up wrong, or any of that sort of thing.
Jiffy Lube, etc isn't any better...I do it myself.
