What I finally bought, and why
2008 Kia Sorento 4WD, loaded.
MSRP 30K plus. With trade and rebate, before taxes, etc - a tad over $21K.
Leather package and the all season mats, etc. These are a good idea around here. Keeps the winter junk off the carpet. 8 way power drivers seat, heated seats, compass, miles to empty, etc, 6 CD changer, dual AC, the usual goodies.
Why? I've been holding out for a hybrid, but. Pricing for them is maxxed, with no deals, wait time is 3-5 months (less important), no drop in price in the foreseeable future. I saw a Kia commercial about the 5K rebate, which they will take off the price of the vehicle, and decided to look (again) at the Sorento.
I checked into the expected mileage for the Kia and compared it to a Camry hybrid, then matched the cost difference with expected miles per gallon using an average cost-per-gallon over the life of the vehicle (we keep ours at least ten years) at $6.00 a gallon.
With the deal we got (including a much higher than book trade-in) I got 9 years (about) to even.
Add in the possible life of the hybrid batteries and cost to replace if they do go bad (I know there's a warranty, but there is always a cost associated with a repair of that magnitude) and I decided an SUV was the way to go.
Hauling is also a factor. If you saw what I do to get stuff home in a 95 Maxima you wouldn't believe it.
4WD torque on demand is going to be a blessing in our Iowa winters.
I've driven it three times. So far I like it - a lot. My wife can see out of it, and she backed it up during the test drive to be sure (she's just shy of 5'-1").
Took me a year and a half to buy a new vehicle. You would not believe how happy my wife is that this is behind us...

Love that "new car" smell! Sounds like you scored. Can't beat a 21K price tag for what you bought. Good job.

Thanks all! I have to admit it's a relief to finally have this over. If Kia hadn't done this rebate I would probably not have bought until next year at the earliest.
Now we can start watching for my wife's next drive. We have at least 5 years so I think the choices will be much more interesting.

I'm sure it's a bit early to be reliable, but I've been getting 24-25mpg so far in mixed city/freeway driving. Not too tacky for an AWD 3.8 V6.
I just hope it stays that good or better.

The MPG should improve as it gets more broken in. Great deal!!!
