Default 1998 chevy malibu problem

I have a 1998 automatic chevy malibu which requires to depress a button on the shifter to move the shifter out of park. This button is getting harder and harder to depress. It seems it's only affected when the car has been sitting awile. Does anybody know what's going on?

Sounds like the button on the shifter is wearing out.

Hopefully that's it (you have to buy the handle - retail $28.63); but we sell a few of the shifters also, which include the BTSI solenoid ($166.87).

I've been told by my local mechanic that only the dealer can fix this. Is that true? How much will the dealer charge to fix this?

Neutral safety switch, if sometimes it will not come out of park? if it's just hard to push, the armature is the problem.

I liked my 98 Malibu. I concur with the rest on the switch and assembly.
