One of my favorite past vehicles that I owned was a 1970 300. 440 6 Pack, yes, 6 Pack and I didn't know how rare it was! Red with White interior and vinyl roof. But God knows I loved that indestructible front bumper and those taillights going all the way across the back. I added the 67-68 Couger sequinnal tail light/turn signal light system. There was no hiding that car anywhere!

Thanks again!
Well, I found a '72 Grand Ville 4-door hardtop. That is pretty close to what you have. From Motor Trend, April, 1972. It was tested with two other full-sized cars. Here are the specs:

--------------------------- Mercury------ Pontiac---- Dodge
--------------------------- Marquis------ Grand Ville-- Monaco

Engine--------------------- 429-4 bbl---- 455-4 bbl--- 440-4 bbl
Net horsepower/net torque- 208/322------ 250/370---- 230/355
Compression ratio---------- 8.5:1--------- 8.2:1------- 8.2:1
Transmission--------------- 3-speed auto- 3-speed auto- 3-speed auto
Rear axle ratio------------- 3.25:1-------- 3.08:1------ 3.23:1
Curb weight--------------- 4,745 lbs------ 4,540------- 4,520
Wheelbase---------------- 124"----------- 126"-------- 122"
Overall length------------- 224.7"--------- 226.3"------- 219.4"
Fuel capacity------------- 22.5 gals.------ 25----------- 23

0-30 mph----------------- 4.6 secs------- 3.8---------- 3.9
0-60 mph----------------- 11.6----------- 10.1--------- 10.5
0-75 mph----------------- 17.3----------- 14.7--------- 15.6

Passing:40-60 mph-------- 6.6 secs------- 5.3----------- 6.0
--------50-70 mph-------- 6.7------------ 5.5----------- 6.4

Speed in gears @ rpm:
1st----------------------- 45 mph@4500-- 42@4000----- 54@4500
2nd----------------------- 76.5@4500---- 69@4000----- 94@4500

*Not top speed.

Base price---------------- $5,097.80------ $4,492.00---- $4,183.00
Options------------------- $1,470.40------ $1,355.05---- $2,022.55
Price as tested------------ $6,568.20------ $5,847.05---- $6,205.50
---------------------------------------

It looks like the Monaco, at 219.4", is the "short" car of the test!
Note: no gas mileage was listed in the spec chart.

I'll see if I have Popular Science tests of a Grand Ville. I think I remember seeing one.

Very interesting data! Thanks for posting that! I dont think thats the same road test I have. I can attest to the MPG - my 73' Grand Ville gets about 10-12 mpg. That 455 loves gas.

Does that test make mention of ride/quietness ratings of each of those?

Yes, that is about the mpg I figured.

Yes, it was mentioned. Here are a few lines from the text...

"Ride and handling are most adequate for limited-use, luxury sedans... [Motor Trend in the '70s had a bias towards non-American cars]... "Coils under the Grand Ville and Marquis provide the smoothest ride, with the torsion bar front suspension and leaf rear on Monaco coming in slightly on the harsh side."

"Sound deadening and road noise isolation is excellent in all three."

I like this quote:
"Archie Bunker would vote liberal to get his hands on one."

Ride and handling - I was thinking that Mopar would be the lowest rating... kinda like the Imperial vs. Cadillac/Lincoln.

I wonder which had the better ride if one was comparing the Imperial against the Marquis and Grand Ville?

In the 3-car test posted, no one car was singled out regarding best ride. But it had to be either the Marquis or the Grand Ville.

As for comparing with the Imperial, that would be interesting. It would be very close as to which of the three had the best ride.

Default I rode in

a 72 and 73 Fury and a 72 Fury wagon and all 3 rode like clouds. And yet the Mopars always came up as noisier in tests. I wonder if Dodges were made any better than the plymouths (like Olds/Buick/Pontiac vs Chevy) or if they were about the same

Me too.... I have some old magazines somewhere.

Yeah, I am 32, but literally look 22 years old (so everyone tells me ), but I am very mature for my age.

Oh yeah - I remember you mentioning this. We had a neighbor in the early-mid 80s that had a late 70s Chrysler Cordoba that I rode in a time or two as a little kid and if I remember correctly, it rode quite well, but not as smooth as the 1974 Pontiac Catalina sedan that my parents had and the 1971 Lincoln Town Car that my grandmother had at the time. My other grandmother had a 1974 Oldsmobile Toronado that also rode better, but the Cordoba did ride better than my dads 1974 Pontiac GTO. Strange that in 1983 we had two 1974 Pontiacs.

Default Did you find

that after 1974, the big cars like the GM and Fords styling got excessive and ungainly in appearance for 75 and 76 before the downsizing in 77? The LTD's, Impala's etc styling lost the subtlety found in the 73 and 72? Remember the old 76 Mercury Marquis John Candy drove in the 1989 movie Uncle Buck? Grilles got overwrought and back lights started to look real dull.

By 74 the Mopars lost all that was uniquely Chrysler.

BTW, do you have any opinion on the old AMC Matador and Ambassador? Kind of stodgy in appearance? I thought both were the same size but the former was mid size, the latter full sized
