My father bought a 1958 Corvette at Barrett Jackson in 2007 and we both go every year. I love to go on Friday and Saturday night when they roll out the really high-dollar vehicles, it's quite a spectacle. I hate how some bash that the guys that buy cars at these auctions have "more money than brains"; honestly if you can afford to spend a few hundred grand on various vehicles in the auction, then you must've done something right. I don't blame them for buying these vehicles if they can afford them, I'd do the same thing if I had the money! My dad is now semi-retired and LOVES going to these auctions and bidding on cars he wanted when he was young. He's worked hard his entire life and saved up a tidy amount of money so if he really wants to spend $100K+ on a classic muscle or sports car, I don't see how anyone can say elsewise.

My reference to "100% original as depicted" was to the seller of the VW van who tried very hard to look "original" in the restoration plus all the extra goodies that were available those years. BJ did not say anything towards originality as they had done on other vehicles. They are on the "UP and UP" so to speak as their reputation is on the line. Of my years in the trade my reputation was beyond reproach.

Today they sold the first car a 66 VW Deluxe van for $55K ...believe to Europe. Had a beefed up dual carb engine 2100cc (I believe the correct # is 2085cc) There is no 2100cc engine. They generally round off the number.

Formula is... Bore x bore x stroke x Pi = CC
92mm x 92mm x 78.4 x 3.1416 = 2085cc
Nothing major just the higher number always sounds impressive.

Based on the sign stating 2100cc means the owne never built the engine himself but purchased it from a builder otherwise he would have stated it correctly. NOT being picky picky but put myself in a buyers shoes who is paying a lot of money and is intitled to the right numbers.

In my business would hear every so often from customers who purchased things somewhere else and had received wrong info. I called it misleading advertising of a product or service.

Steve

momof2dfw, can't say I agree with you. First off as said cars are not a good investment though some "think" they are. Same ones who watch BJ. You restore a car as a hobby. Unfortunately the average Joe can't afford it on an old iron anymore. Wasn't the same song 20 years ago.

And yes the bidders on BJ are IMO have more money than brains. Doesn't matter if they have good paying jobs or not. I've seen total morons have good paying jobs. I've seen average joe's get daddy's inheritance. Some of those cars I'm sure you could get a lot cheaper, but on BJ the bidding war breaks out and nature says "I shall not be outdone". So in the end you spend $55k for a 68 VW hippie van sans the incense and reefer. I could have bought the same thing for maybe two tenths of that in about the same shape from a privite individual.

Ok I'm off to finish my bondo job on my old 69 Camaro and then put on a slick paint job so i can sell my 10k car for 50k at BJ. It'll sell for big bucks. Just watch.

Also momof2dfw to say that most of the cars are not repainted and modified is not true; most cars on BJ have been restored and that usually means a repaint and new parts. (modified). A car is only original once. Very few if any of those cars are actually original.

I'll bet some of them were probably even hacked up at one point in their life, but someone took it upon themselves to at least "try" to bring them back to life.

Has anyone on here ever bought from Barrett-Jackson?

No,I haven't,but I have seen some of the most retarded individuals on TV (next to Dog the bounty hunter) I've ever seen in my life right there gathered in one place. Are these buyers ALL trust fund babies? Did they all win workers compensation lawsuits? No way the could have earned that money....their not smart enough to get out of the house without assistance, much less work AND a person who earned their money would spend it much wiser.Check the prices they give, then check craigslist,Ebay, car sales papers and you'll quickly see that they pay up to 75% over what the market (outside of their little circle) is for the same vehicle.

BTW...do you think they give free alcohol away at the auction? I notice that most have a real "flushed" look sitting in the crowd.

Clearly - VERY CLEARLY, you know absolutely squat about this auction.

That's completely and utterly untrue, almost all of the people who attend this auction have earned their money by working hard and many are baby boomers who want to own vehicles they couldn't back when they were teenagers. Some very well-known buyers are Ron Pratte who built up a very successful wood framing and concrete foundation company which merged with Pulte homes a few years back and Dave Ressler who owns a few large Chevrolet dealerships. My dad is a farmer from Iowa and he's earned his money by blood, sweat, and tears. People like you have no business telling others how to spend their money, some collect Rolex watches, some collect art, and these people collect classic cars! Obviously you haven't ever been to this auction or met some of the bidders otherwise you'd be singing a different tune.

You know guys.......... after reading some of the "arguments" being put forth to try and tell us how wrong we all are...... you know, those of us that actually DO attend these auctions, actually KNOW FIRSTHAND these people, etc...... I've figured it is probably best to leave well enough alone.

In the long run those that have worked hard and MANAGED their money very well and know a good deal when they see it, have the cash to buy that "dream" and do so will be the ones buying their dreams. The rest will still be sitting on the sidelines bemoaning them and trying to come up with reasons why "those people" are "ruining it" for everyone else.

As it stands and knowing what I do now about some of the people at auctions like B-J, Kruse-Leake, Russo and Steele, R&M, etc......... I'll put my money with the guys sitting at the auctions . They seem to have done fairly well managing their own from the ground up. Then being that some of them have actually managed some of our investments........ and we are able to realize the dream of owning some of these cars we always dreamed of I'll take those guys sitting there at Barrett-Jackson right now having a fun time hanging out with others that have a love for these cars

Along w/ Ron Pratt some others to check out that have come from nothing and now have AWESOME collections:
1. J.B. Nethercutt (passed away in 2004 but his son still has the collection and a GREAT museum) - Jack Boison Nethercutt was born in South Bend, Ind., on Oct. 11, 1913. He moved to Southern California when he was 9, after his mother’s death, to live with his aunt, Merle Nethercutt Norman. After graduating from Santa Monica High School, he studied chemistry at Caltech.
Working out of a house in the Ocean Park section of Santa Monica, Nethercutt’s aunt had started a small business producing cosmetics for sale locally in 1931. Nethercutt dropped out of college and joined the venture, helping establish Merle Norman Cosmetics.
2. Wayne Davis (recently sold about 100 cars out of his 160+ collection)
3. Don't think Jay Leno was born w/ a silver spoon in his mouth either

Look up 'buyers premium' on their website and youll see the buyers and sellers BOTH can actually have to pay a percentage of the final value, to barrett jackson. So the price it sells for is off by around 7-12 pct. (buyer adds this). I belive the sellers premium is higher on the 'premium' nights (when the big dollar cars are out), and the most high rollers in attendance. Its nuts. Good for them, if they want to spend it they are free to do so. I see very few 'good' deals at barrett in scottsdale, but the one here in west palm (i think) was on tv and it seemed like they were giving thigs away. You could have filled up a truck, hauled it to scottsdale and simply tripled your money. So i dont see Scottsdale as being a good deal, but yes, the buyers, and sellers, are real. I did see a few cars sell at Scottsdale last year for around 75% of what it would cost to build, so i guess that is a good deal. With the economy as it is, i can imagine some collector cars arent going for what they used to.
