In terms of styling, I gravitate towards the 1950's for American cars, although I enjoy many of the designs of the 1960-70's as well. The 1970's-1980's were a high point for German styling in my opinion.
Late 40s through the 70s. MGTC, MGTF, MGA, MGB, Triumph TR3 & TR4, Austin Healey 100-4, 100-6, 3000 & Sprite, Sunbeam Alpine & Tiger, Jag XK-120, XKE. Can you tell I like Brit sports cars?
So a few like the fins of the 50s, but no one mentioned the "mobster" look of the 40s and 30s. How did Plymouth sell so many PT Cruisers that seem to borrow from that era?
I like the 60s and 70s, too. The 70s because I was a kid then. The 60s 'cause my brothers bought 60s Camaros and 'Stangs in the 80s.
I think we did a similar thread not too long ago. If forced to pick just one decade, I guess I would go with 62 to 72, with the best cars really being 67, 68, and 69. But the 30's to 50's had some great cars, how can you forget the old V-16 Lincolns, the Cords, the Duzenbergs...the 1950's BMW 507, the Tri-Chevies, T-birds and Vettes from that era.
There was another sweet spot IMHO about 1985 to 1990, cars with digital fuel injection and good/great power, but considerably more styling and simpler than current offerings.
That said, for example one really could argue the current Vette is the best ever, without being a GM adman. Current Lotus Elise, Mustang, CRV, the last few Vipers...it's all good.
