Don't forget about the wire wheel covers. They accessorized very well with the vinyl tops!!!
My mom had an '84 Monte Carlo Limited Edition with T-tops. The portion of the roof aft of the T-Tops was vinyl. And it had those danged old wire wheel covers. OMG those things were so hard to clean. It also had white wall tires....well it was a about a 1" wide ring on the tires.
Honestly I wish I had that car back. I'd make a few changes but it'd be cool to have it back.
A vinyl roof does have some benefits.
- The interior of the car is slightly quieter.
- The interior is slightly cooler when parked in the sun on a hot day.
- It allows for a kind of two-tone look. The two-tone look which was very popular in the '50s pretty much faded away by the late-'60s and '70s.
Here is an example.
The car in the back is a friend's '66 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham, cream with a black vinyl roof. It does give a two-tone look which many people like.
The car in front of it is belongs to another friend... a '76 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance. Green with a white vinyl top. Again, it also gives a two-tone look.
The black one in the very front has a vinyl top a well. What's the story there?
Heck, even Pinto's and Mavericks could be had with vinyl tops. Even standard with some option packages. I can attest to the rust issues, although my problems are because I still drive 'em. Yeah, after 40 years, your going to have rust issues. Also you couldn't get a sunroof on most cars without the vinyl top. Anybody remember that? I do.
Here in the desert Southwest, they really got ugly and started to peel. Granted, when new, I thought they were pretty nice. My parents had a couple Cadillacs with them but I never did. My Luxury LeMans was two -toned though, white top and emerald green body. Between auto car washes and the desert sun, the green got pretty bad there at the end.
