1980 mid-size wagons (Malibu, Fairmont, Volare')
Which wagon do you think is the most appealing? These were the top of the line mid-size wagons from the big-three entry makes in 1980. I know its ironic, we have been discussing the Fairmont and its not received good reviews. I know for a fact though that the Malibu of this were really decent cars. You can also see the lower-level wagons in some of the photos.
1980 Malibu Estate wagon
1980 Ford Fairmont Squire wagon
1980 Plymouth Volare' Premier wagon ('79 shown, but were identical to the '80)

I like the lines of the Malibu better than the others. Even though I don't particularly like that Malibu nose. (I think the 82-83 nose looks better)
The cool thing about those Malibu wagons is they make good hot rods/drag cars on the cheap. Something you can buy cheap, build it to go fast and still take the family along.
Even cooler is you can take a wrecked Grand National and transplant the engine/trans/intercooler/rear end/dash into one of those Malibus and make one of the ultimate sleepers.....complete with air conditiong!!!! No one would suspect anything until "that grandma wagon just blew my Mustang GT/Cobra/Z-28/Corvette/Trans AM away."

The 1980 Malibu Estate Wagon, wasn't the Ford Fairmont considered a compact car? I always believed it was a compact car.

Could be and probably was classified as a compact, but it was the closest competitor Ford had to the Malibu that year. Below that was the small Pinto and above it was the big LTD.
See what I mean...
