MGB! You can get a really nice restored MGB for quite a bit less than that! Then spend the rest on good beer....

Get a nice 03-05 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. Almost 300 HP, All Wheel Drive and with minimal modification you can have a car that will flat out destroy the average V8 on the streets! Tons of potential!

Guess I'm old fashioned. "Sports car" doesn't conjure up images of 4-door sedans to me...

Yeah...but traditional sports cars aren't primarily about speed. MGTC, Bugeye Sprite, Morgan +4...those are sports cars.....but they weren't fast even in their day.....

I agree it depends on your definition of a sports car. To me, it's a two seater, maybe with a 'fake' backseat that no human would ever be comfy in. Two door for sure. Enough power to get you on the interstate without worrying that you'll get creamed. Sits nice and low.
To me, a Miata is a toy car. I love them and would love to have one, but it's not a 'sports car' in my opinion. At least it's not how I define it because of it's lack of power. Super fun, and great for heading to the beach, but sports car it is not.
My dream sports car: '02 Trans Am WS6. Hubba hubba.

02 TA... I had a buddy who lent me his for 6 months while he was deployed. I loved them till then. After having one it was the worst riding car I had driven. I drove it for 3 weeks and couldnt deal with it anymore. But it sure was pretty.

Depends on your criteria for a "sports car"; pure old school sports car wheels, a Mazda Miata is hard to beat. Its unlikely that your driving ability will ever exceed the car's capability. An alternative to the Miata is the Toyota MR2 (no longer in production), great handling but no storage space. Older Vettes are also a good deal if you can drive it, but you need to be careful because the the Vette's capability is way beyond most driver's ability. The newer Mustang GT (05 and on, I own an 06) are really fun and affordable. The Honda S2000 is a superb vehicle but best left to really skilled drivers, its not a very user friendly daily driver (JMHO).

If cornering and agility is your thing rather than straight line performance, a Miata might indeed be something for you.
Plenty of upgrades possible, too.
