coming from WI, which at the time had the highest drunk driving %..... the worst thing to see on tv is when they show someone arrested after their 5th, or 6th, or higher..... dui/owi. So they were caught 5+ times. Imagine how many other times they drove drunk without getting caught. I never understood how a white collar criminal can spend more time behind bars then one who has this many offenses. These drivers are taking the lives of others in their hands every time.
I have lost friends back in the day, when the laws were lax and there were times the local officer just took ur beer and told us to get on home. And I watched my daughter go to funerals for her HS friends as well. And to be honest, I drove impaired when I was younger, thinking nothing of it. I can only thank the above I never caused any harm. I grew up in a household full of substance abuse so I can understand the argument about it being a disease. But that can't be used as an excuse.
Regardless of their situation, keep these idiots of the road before they kill another innocent person....

No drunk driving is not ok, and I have ZERO respect for anyone who hurts/kills another due to DUI. In fact they need to make the penalties much stiffer. Me I'm all for an eye for eye, tooth for tooth, life for life. Spare my tax dollars housing hardened criminals, let the tax money pay for the bullets to put them to sleep FOREVER.

Unless exactly 50% of Tennessee's drivers are intoxicated, that figure is worthless. You need to do the math to see if drunk drivers are over-represented in accident statistics. I suspect you'll find that's the case.

There's no excuse for driving when you know your decision-making skill and reaction times have been impaired - be it due to alcohol, drugs, fatigue or whatever. None.

If you can raise the cash to drink, you can afford a cab home. If you can't, don't drink. And you have to decide before you start drinking, obviously.

Meant to add: This is one point where I've seen Government Propaganda do good. In my time, the prevalent attitude to drunk driving has gone from "You really shouldn't" to "You're an inconsiderate psycho who should be treated like a pariah, and so are those who let you do it."

Which has dropped the number of drunk drivers more than fines and jailtime could. (Although the fines are very, very high - and adjusted for income.) It's just not done, and people will stop you and take your keys.
