i think the general point is that the technical definition of a "sports car" excludes the coupes he listed; however, very few people seem to have a problem calling muscle, pony or sporty coupe cars "sports cars."
in his budget range, if he wants straight line performance and can turn a wrench, the mustang probably wins out on cost and aftermarket.
however I would not want to have a garage without an econobox/suv/beater to serve as a back up to the "sports car"
that's why I asked him earlier if he wants a project, a dependable daily and if he plans to work on whatever he buys.
you can get a really quick, low maintenace car right off the used car market, but getting one in that range that does not require (or at least beg for) some work might be hard

The Camaro / Trans AM from 1998-2002 is one of the best bang for your buck cars out there. 350 hp and 6 speed manual in stock form. Handles reasonably well, and can be had for under 10 grand in reasonable condition. Loads of aftermarket as well.

If he doesn't care for the interior, a later year Camaro with the LS1 wouldn't be a bad purchase.

No offense, but you are wrong - I have been working on these cars for years now and the LS1 was underrated by the factory at 320 HP so it would not steal the Corvette's thunder. The LS1's all make around 1 H.P. per C.I. (accounting for 356 H.P roughly), and I have seen many of them dyno-proven.
The LS1 camaros and T/A's will consistently lay down 305-315 HP at the rear wheels, which accounts for around 15% drivetrain loss.
Also, there was no such thing as a Z28 5 speed from 1998-2002. The 6 speed manual was an option for all of the V8 cars.
I know it was a option but if you didnt order it wouldnt it be a 5spd ? also im talking RWHP NOT FLYWHEEL numbers.I got what you saying tho . I know the 03-04 cobra are under rated too.I know more about the mustangs then the camaro's

I'm sure that JWE was talking about the manufacturer's stated horsepower claim. To that extent, JWE is correct. None of the stock Camaro/Firebird models came with a 350+ hp rating.
Johnny is absolutely right about the Z28 and T/A coming with a 6-speed manual. The only 5-speed manuals came in V-6 models of the Camaro/Firebird.
That's good! A day spent learning nothing is a wasted day.
