The Chinese have already taken over much of the motorcycle sales in the U.S. and, if their economy doesn't fall apart before ours, they will probably take over the American automobile industry as well.
Should I buy a vehicle built by Washington bureaucrats or a Chinese autoworker? It's a tough call.
cheap trade and shipping will push all the manufacturing jobs to countries like china. once that happens none of us will have a job to be able to buy one of those chinese cars. its time we tax some imports to pay our debts and encourage manufacturing to come back HERE!
Warren Buffett is hedging his bets. He invested in BYD - Build Your Dreams. They already make the majority of cellphone and Li-ion batteries, and claim that they have a battery system that will propel a car the size of a Toyota Camry about 60 miles on a single charge. That's better than the 40 mile range the Chevy Volt that GM keeps leaning on.
The cost of the Volt? ~$35-40k
The cost of the BYD car, even taking into account tarriffs and development and scaling and infrastructure cost? ~$25k
Cars might be made in China but when you factor in the costs on this side, taxes, subsidizing auto loans, mandated fuel and emmissions standards, they won't be any cheaper and will cost more. And what about lead paint, toxic chemicals in carpeting and upholstery, plastic, etc? People want green cars but China is poisoning the planet more than anybody.

I'll stick with Japan for the time being. Maybe Ford, if I'm feeling lucky.
I would be more likely to get a horse to ride before I'd buy a Chinese car. I'm all for free trade, but we seriously need to diversify.

No kidding, we need real reform on trade, we need to be more reliant on ourselves. China is booming because we buy so much crap from there.

great points
WE HAVE an endless labor supply, i mean look at our unemployment, i think it took this downfall for people to realize what they should be making if they want to work in the manufacturing labor force. In the MI forum, (where i'm from) the birth place of blue collar America... mostly, there are a couple plants opening, but pay is anywhere near what they used to get, but they don't even care anymore, they just want to work. If we made all the stuff we that we buy, here, our economy would be so amazing it wouldn't even be funny. If some one doesn't want to go to college fine, there would be a job waiting for you, but don't expect to make any more than 30/40k a year.
As far as i go though, i can't really talk, i mean, i will probably never own a new vehicle in my life, but i have no reason to. I can just rebuild whatever i need to make it "new". That said, i try to buy American parts when i need them.
I honestly do not understand how some one can be born here, live here, grow up here, yet create/own/run a company and decide to move everything over seas? i mean really.
No matter where its made, I buy because of durability and cost. But Im not a small car person, put me in a truck and Im happy to go!
I thought most cars anyway were made in Japan these days.....what cars are made in China?
As noted earlier, Chinese factories produce what is ordered....if crap is speced, crap is produced. If quality is ordered, Chinese workers are as capable as any workers in the world.
Remember as you are watching fireworks on the 4th....or fire a gun....invented by the Chinese thousands of years ago.
