I bought a 1997 Infiniti J30 with 99k miles just over a year ago for $2900. I have 137,000 miles on there now and its gotten beaten up

I checked everything out, and i just barely qualify (my car gets 18 mpg combined according to the government website).

To qualify for the full $4500, I need to get a new car that gets 28 mpg combined. Not a big car guy, just want something that is reliable, and somewhat comfortable to ride in. Also need 4 doors

These are the cars I am considering:

2009 Toyota corrola
2009 Nissan Sentra
2009 Honda civic
2009 chevy cobalt- needs to be xfe model in order to qualify (not sure how commonly found this would be on dealers lots?)

I want to spend $13,000 or less. ($8500 out of pocket plus the $4500 from the government).

I know that i would be able to get the Cobalt for that price, but not sure about the other 3. What would you guys do if you were me?

I would spend a bit more and get the Corolla. But, that is just me. I like them better than the others you listed. Civic is a close second, but it will cost you more too.

Geez, I just lost a long post of particulars as I've been considering the same thing.

I personally liked the Sentra though a tad above your budget. Haven't driven the Civic or Toyota yet but hear good things about all three car companies. The Honda salesman insisted there was no need to research further. You might want to look at the hatchbacks as being more within your budget. Respectively, the Versa, Fit, and Scion.

Pontiac also has a hatchback called a Vibe which I preferred over the Dodge Caliber even though Chrysler will match your $4500 starting this week till the end of August. I didn't care for the Chevy.

Nissan is doing 2K cash back until 8/3. We took advantage of the clunkers bill for 4500 plus the 2K we walked out with a 2009 Sentra SL for under 14K. We could have gotten the S trim level for under 13K. The only other car comparable in that range out the door was the Hyundai Elantra. I didn't think the Civic or Corolla were worth paying 16-18K for after driving them.

we just picked up a corolla s model. the sticker was 19, the dealer took off 3 as a toyota promo on all corollas, and clunker took off 4500, for a total of $12 plus taxes etc. we got a 4% loan, so it's about 200/month. be prepared to fight for the clunker deal, though. don't even bring it up until you've negotiated the sale price of the car.

the civic was about $1K more than the corolla (with all the comparable stuff).

if it's important to you, the corolla we got was made in the us (calif, i think) and the civic in canada.

You could get the honda civic dx model, with air, if needed, now they also are
clearing the lots for 2010. Check the honda fit also, it is safe, but may be somewhat too small for you, reminds he of the civic hatchback!

Go to Enterprise or Avis and rent one for a weekend. You'll be glad you did, because the Cobalt is really underwhelming. I'm kind of loyal to GM so i hate to knock them, but you can find much better than this car.

Has anyone considered an American car? I think the quality is back in the Ford line. Maybe GM is getting better in quality. I am just thinking of an American economy recovery.

People are SOOOOOOOOO worried about the American worker (like they really care) that they are forgetting the fact that the profits go straight to Japan or Korea.
