I recently had new General Grabbers installed on my '86 Jeep CJ-7 at the local Sears Automotive Shop. They not only matched the best price (including Tire Rack's) but they beat it by 10%.
Nowadays with so much Price Matching on tires, it hardly seems worth the time and trouble to order online plus if there is a problem . . .
Also, it is so much easier to let the tire shops do all the work and I prefer being able to personally verify the "Build Date" prior to installation and paying.
Quite an old thread, but TR still remains a good source of research and rubber. My last 6 sets came from them and I'm about to order a 7th for this winter.
I used them to research, I was going to purchase from them as well but my Dodge dealer got to within $20 of the TR price (including shipping) so I gave them the business.
I have never ordered tires online but i researched tirerack and discounttiredirect many times. I'm going with discounttiredirect because of the free shipping. Yes they have a smaller selection but still many quality name brands.
I've been buying tires and wheels from the Tire Rack since the 1980s. I've purchased dozens of tires and wheels from them with zero issues. My order usually shows up in 2 days. 3 days at most. They're pretty much the only place I will buy tires.
I'm not impressed with their recommended installers. There's a shop in my area that is widely recognized as the best place to have tires mounted/balanced, but the Tire Rack will not list them as a recommended installer because they're not a full service shop (they only do tires).
Can someone tell me why ordering from tirerack is worth it? They charge shipping that is at least $100 for a set. You can go to local tire shop and pay roughly the same price because you aren't paying shipping.

I have found that tirerack is usually cheaper even with the shipping. I've only had one dealer willing to match their prices and that was with the shipping. I then had to pay the sales tax on top of it.
The other great tirerack feature is the sheer variety they offer. I'm looking at snow tires and they had at least a dozen choices. Most local tire dealers might have 3.
i got mine from discount auto tires because of free shipping
