Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? Our transmission started acting up a few days ago. The dealer wanted to replace the transmission for a mere $6100. Now, the car is at Mr. Transmission and we're keeping our fingers crossed that they will be able to fix it.
FYI, the car has 94000 miles of highway driving, and has had all scheduled maintenance.
Fortunately, we're near family and aren't stranded in some hotel.
Acting up doesn't really tell us much, but 94k mi is a lot for two years - the transmission fluid typically needs to be changed more often under such conditions than is normal.
So your car is two years old, but has nearly 8 years of mileage on it. Nothing to be surprise about here, especially if the fluid has never been changed.

This is what worries me about the new 5-6 speed autos and CVT's, the replacement cost of the tranny is so damn high it's almost not even worth fixing in many cases.

Hmmmm Ditto.
