Temperature and compass in mirror went out..
I have a 2003 GMC Sierra pickup. In the rearview mirror it shows the temperature and direction you are going, but that doesn't light up anymore. How do I fix it? Is it just a fuse that needs replaced, or something more?

Never had this occur before. I've got an '02 'burban (same generation as your Sierra so it's probably same part). I suppose the first thing I'd do is check fuses....possibly loose connections...if no dice there I'd start looking for a new mirror.

Really, if it was more than a fuse I would just forget about it since it is not an essential accessory. I, myself, have never had a car that said what the temperature was or what direction I was going. It might be quite expensive to replace.

...but if you had it you'd miss it if it were gone. The direction hasn't ever really been that useful to me but I definitely would miss the temp if it were to suddenly stop working.

It isn't like I rely on it, it is just a nice feature I enjoyed having. If it is as something as simple as a fuse that needs to be replaced then I am okay doing that, but I am definately not spending hundreds of dollars if I have to replace the whole thing. I just don't know where to start, and do not want to pay money to take it into a dealer for a small thing such as this. I was just hoping someone here knew exactly how to fix it!

Ok, this is the best I can do for you. Has anything else gone out besides the mirror, as it might be a fuse that controls other things which would be easily to diagnose? There is also a electrical connection on the mirror that might have become either loose or unplugged. I also looked on Ebay, and if the mirror electronics went out it will be around $50 to replace as opposed to the $300-$400 a dealer would charge you for the mirror. Hope this helps....

Probably you can get a mirror like this from a junkyard. I see the mirrors advertised in Automobile magazine, they can be bought new, I don't recall offhand the price.

Hey guys, be nice, I am only trying to help. I just do not want to see this girl get gouged for $500 on something that probably is nothing more than a loose connection.

absolutely. She should check obvious easy things to solve the problem before she moves to the buying phase.
And as you posted...ebay is actually a pretty good source for inexpensive parts. I'd always check for used parts first because buying OEM stuff from GM will sometimes run a heck of a bill.
