The 1970 LT-1 compression ratio was 11:1 not 10:1. Check your facts

The LT-1 out of the factory was a killer. The block was decked and the heads were ported and polished. This was in the early 1980's. With all the advancement in components, I'd say the GM engines right now are better.

Sorry I meant to type "11" instead of "10".

Wow.. thanks alot for all of the responses guys..

I ended up going with a 1987 IROC Z. Got it for 2200 and everything looks nice. Brand new, quality paint job with the emblem on the side.. 350.. Automatic.. new tires.. 140k original miles.. interior is pristine..

I'm still in college so I didn't want something with intentions of trying to make it a 10 second car. I really just wanted something that was going to help me learn about the car so that later on when i'm out of school, I can start investing some money into making it worthy of a track. For now i'm just going to focus on keeping it in good shape with a few mods when I have the money. Any suggestions on first, relatively cheap mods?

A cheap mod, if they make one for your car, would be a replacement chip in the ECM.

Maybe a K&N air filter.

Then when you save a bit more look into a new aftermarket exhaust. Go with 3 inch (if single from the catalytic converter) or 2.5 inch (if going with true duals). For a muffler, I'd go with a Dynomax Ultraflow since they flow a lot of air.

Try to avoid Flowmaster if you can. Yeah they might sound cool but flow tests have shown they're not a high flowing muffler. Meaning they're good on applications of where the engine isn't going to be revved past 3k rpm or so and thus isn't required to breathe heavily.

Then a set of headers will also help.

Maybe a slightly higher than stock torque converter. If you change out your camshaft you may have to replace it so that's something to consider.

Rear end gears....not sure what your current rear has in it now but if it has let's say....a 2.73 ring and pinion...a step up to a 3.42 or even a 3.73 would wake up the accleeration.

thanks for the suggestions..

yea it currently has a flowmaster exhaust on it. only 1 though, not sure why its not dual exhaust but i'll get that taken care of when I add better exhaust. It already has headers. so I guess a replacement chip is something I should look into, and also a K&N air filter. I recently got it tuned up and everything replaced so I probably should have gotten the aftermarket filter taken care of then instead of going with a stock one. Definitely going to look into the rear end gears mod also.

Those cars I believe came with a single exhaust factory regardless of what engine was in it, and then just fed into one transversial muffler that had 2 outlets to give the appearance of a dual exhaust....similar to the LSX Camaros later on.
