Find a good AWD vehicle. Test drive a Lexus RX300/330. Look around the 2000-2004 years since those will fit within your budget and require very little maintanence.

Not to mention it's a great tow vehicle.

I agree that the Ford Expedition would also be a great choice.

It's almost D-Day...lease is up in 3 weeks. Got a blank check from the bank so I can buy right now.

I'm 90% certain I've narrowed it down to a 2006+ Dodge Durango Limited HEMI 4x4. 2006 gets MDS, which shuts down 4 cycls when not in use. Kinda hard to find one with how picky I am but looks like with around 40k miles they can be had for around $17k.

The dealers in Colorado must really love them, as they are all $20k+ for one. Sigh.

I am finding them on the east coast cheaper, like this one:
http://www.herbeedodge.com/vehicle.asp?v=900479

Not many used SUVs out there with 335hp/370lbft, 7 seating, full-time AWD/4hi/4lo, power liftgate, sunroof, rear dvd, leather heated memory seats, navigation, etc with 40k miles, 4 years old and under $17k.

What else similar can be had for the same money? Tahoes are more expensive, slower, and don't have full time AWD. Expeditions are even slower, and it's a Ford lol. I want a SUV with some balls, as I'm already taking a 25% cut in HP due to the elevation (8500').

I currently drive a 06 Magnum R/T AWD with the 5.7 and have put 40k miles on it in 20 months, 0 issues from it. This is why I'm leaning towards the Dodge.

Just remember that the Dodge drinks gas like it is going out of style. Everybody I know that owns one, that is the biggest complaint.

It won't be much different from her current car, 2006 TrailBlazer SS 6.0L 395hp/395lb, 4 speed, 4.10 gears. Should even be an upgrade. Thank goodness she works 3 miles from work, so she doesn't put a ton of miles on her car.

I think I'd feel better with my wife and future unborn kids riding in the D compared to a Prius in the event of an accident!

My wife thinks Foresters are for lesbians.....and I agree. Though the XT with the turbo isn't too shabby. No 3rd seat also is killer. The old square ones are fugly, 2009's are still over $20k. Keep their resale too good. I need something that depreciates so I can get a good deal on a used one and keep it for 8 years.

The wife wants something big to compensate for her short stature (4'11). Either Durango, Expedition or Tahoe I believe. Durango wins as far I as can tell with what I get for the money. Kinda limited when only having $17k on a used budget.

why not just keep the trailblazer it being the SS model makes it kinda rare and it will have better resale value over a 06 "hemi" durango plus the tranny in the trailblazer and fit and finish is way above any dodge product IMO

The Dodge Durango is the second-worst Dodge model, mainly from complaints where the vehicle shuts down while driving, suspension complaints (especially ball joint failure) & engine failure complaints.

I'll be sure to tell my 4'11" wife that since that's what she has, a 2010.
