I have a 2005 4Runner and sometimes when I turn the wheel, the horn blows and won't stop until I either hit the top of the steering wheel or grab both sides of the steering wheel and pull the wheel towards me. There is no pattern to it, I can turn left or right and it can happen or it can not happen for a few days but then start right over again.

I'd like to tackle it myself rather than pay a lot of money at the dealer but don't want to mess with the SRS airbag inside of it. Any ideas on what to look for or how to take it apart so I can get a look inside?

Have the airbags ever gone off on this car?

Right off the bat I would suspect three things: the airbag is loose on its mounts and the movement is causing the horn contacts to touch; the horn contacts themselves are loose or improperly connected; or there is an issue with the clockspring.

The airbags have never been deployed in the car.

Even though its not a big project ,it is not one for a someone who doesnt know what he is doing. The horn contacts are most likely the problem and the air bag will have to be removed first . It requires special tools to remove the wheel to get to the contacts.

Has anyone with road rage ever used the steering wheel as a punching bag? That will do it too.

We had this problem in a car. It did not happen when the steering wheel was in one particular tilt position. People who did nto like that tilt position just had to learn to wave when they turned so it looks like you did it on purpose.

Another option is to disconnect the horn. Of course then you do nto have a horn and that can be a safety issue.

In most newer vehicles, the horn assembly is built into the air bag.

For the sake of cost of that item, you may want to rig up a horn button on the lower dash and rewire that way...

I have found quite a few Buick Rivieras (95-99 models) in past project car hunting that suffered the same issue. At least GM was consistent there.

It has a bad clock spring.Take it to the dealer, bite the bullet. In the mean time remove horn fuse or relay. You will proably find anything else that is above the column and in steering wheel will not be working properly.Such as cruise control, and if you have radio controls on wheel.I have replaced many in my day.

I am really hoping that the steering wheel doesn't turn when you blow the horn
