Default Advice, opinions, and (mis)information...

I am glad I found this forum, it is quite different than other automotive forums than I was used to. I tend toward specific forums specializing in certain enthusiasms; hotrods, wheeling, etc.

This one is cool because you get such a cross section of interest; folks that are not used to mechanical problems, old/odd car enthusiasts, rule/law questions, etc.

I enjoy the diversity of opinions, the sincere advice and the information that is new to me.

Another thing that is interesting to me is that when someone posts clearly false information, not opinion mind you, but clearly BAD and false information, there seems to be an irrational back lash if one tries to correct it. I have read, and try to abide by the TOS, but it seems there is almost no recourse to correct some really inane info posted here.

Does anyone else have similar experience and maybe have some advice on how to deal with it?

My hope is that the more rational and experienced here will chime in and correct such misinformation (and I have seen and appreciate that), but is there a more systematic way?

Thanks.

Oh Heck ! Yes some info can be wrong and can upset people too, I just try to reply with correct info and I sometimes find humor in the off the wall response that some people who are not even close respond with.I often wonder how some are able to even type !

An open forum like this will never be the best source of information.

Model and Brand specific forums can more often help you out, with proper and true information.

For simple troubleshooting, this one's good though, if a bit unserious.

I agree with the Viking. Up until recently, my favorite car forum required members to enter a VIN (private) before posting in the member area. Sure you can game it, but it weeded out some of the more outlandish content.

I doubt anyone would make a serious decision based on a "general" car chat forum without at least checking it for second and third sources.

The issue here is who is responsible for the info that gets posted. The owner of that post is and nobody else. You can offer a differing opinion/info but it's never your place to correct or embarrass another member if you disagree with what they have said. THAT is the moderators job. PERIOD!

In the end it is for the the OP to sort out and decide for themselves if they wish to follow any/all of the info they read , or hear, from any outside source as to if they will use any/all of it.

You should follow your own advice.

Your reply in another thread:

"From the tenor of all your post one can safely assume that you too are a young uneducated person. That said, back off kid you're in over your head here."

So lets say that if someone says: "because of the GATT all cars need to be manufactured in the US", it is improper to refute such false information?

I do not buy that for one minute, it does not make any sense and is not in the TOS.

Correcting misinformation is certainly not against the TOS.

Please familiarize yourself with the TOS.
