Run-flats are a good option, especially for a woman who cannot change, or rather will not change her own tire. I would never waste the money on them for any vehicle I or my wife owned, but that's me...
Who the hell was talking about putting them on yourself??? You also said you bought them at cost, not retail. Compare apples to apples, because you certainly are not.

To the original poster, I see my post was a little rude, so I apologize.

It's kinda hard to imagine the costs of a Ford Escort are being made against a BMW 328i. It's like comparing a Happy Meal to dinner at Morton's Steakhouse.

Coming from a Car Girl and an owner of a BMW w/ run flats

She took her car to a local BMW dealership and waited for me to pick her up. Upon arriving, I asked the service manager what the problem was. He informed me the car needed new tires. I asked him for the replacement cost. He smiled and said..."One thousand two-hundred eighty-six dollars ($1,286)!"

I said...."WHAT??? Supposedly these are some kind of "run flat" tires. Didn't know such an animal existed.

I called the place where I've gotten my tires for 12 years. Their cost? $923. Still expensive but at least $363 less. We got the tires at my place.

I was dumbfounded by this exhorbitant price. Even though my GF is not hurting monetarily, I think it's a God aweful waste to spend that kind of money on tires. Makes me really appreciate my cheap little car.

BTW, total replacement of my four tires this year??? $200!!!
Priceless!!!
Yes, BMW has run flats. Stay away from the Perilli's. We actually had BMW pay for two sets of tires. The Perilli's came on my BMW and barely lasted 8000 miles. They tried to say it was my driving. Nope, got my Suburban 4x4 with tires on it for 20K miles that don't show the wear those Perilli's did. BMW replaced them w/ the same tire, Perilli's. Got about 10K miles out of that set. Did some research on the Bimmer forums and found that the Perilli's are NOT holding up and BMW doesn't even put them on their cars as much now. Again, had BMW pay some of the replacement costs (1/2) and told them we wanted the Conti's on the car or else. The Conti's have been MUCH better. They lasted a lot longer and only began to show wear at around 18K miles. Had the BMW dealer quote me on tires from them for us paying for all of it (I don't mind now that they are actually lasting as long as they should). Of course they were a lot higher. Hubby has a fleet of trucks (and cars - car guy ) and he called his vendors. Got a full set for a lot less than the BMW dealership wanted but they are still my Conti Run Flats.

Oh, the Conti's ride a LOT better than the Perilli's as well.

Oh, and the reason for the Run Flats on the BMW: they do NOT include a spare tire. If you got a flat there is no tire to change for it. At least with the run flats you can drive till you get to a tire shop and get it repaired or replaced with no damage being done to the rims or car.

The other thing is the car has a sensor and will give you a warning that you have a low tire. I don't need it as I notice the air pressure in my tires just about every single time I get in any of my vehicles. Others I guess could use such a sensor judging by the looks of what I see on the road.

You are CRAZY! I hope your girlfriend never rides with you in your car. No WAY would I put that crap on my car and risk my life and everyone that might be in it and near me on the roads.

Finding a good deal on good tires, yes. Buying crap, that'll turn a potentially safe situation dangerous, no.

$1300 for run flats is nothing, I pay $700 to get decent tires on my Corolla, and that's the on sale price.
The proper tire can make a world of difference in the gas mileage and the ride of the car not to mention the SAFETY of it.

I don't mind changing a tire and can if need be. The thing is with the BMW there is no spare to use if one should get a flat. That is why they have the run flats. If you were to get a BMW that had run flats you would have to go out and buy a tire for a spare and just keep it in the trunk taking up valuable space.

You can get cheap tires for not a lot of money, of overengineered tires like run flats for a ton of money, and that's before you even comparison shop for the best price at places like tirerack.com.

You and your girlfriend both obviously know very little about cars based on your post.

Actually, there are cans of foam, somewhat similar to the stuff that is in your tires, that you can buy, and keep in the car instead of using run flats or having a spare.

For those who care about this things, you can then use better (performance and/or economically wise) tires, at the same time, you reduce the unsprung weight, increasing performance.

As for the person who asked about my tires, in that instance it was Continental ContiContact 3, studless winter tires. For summertires I think I have Bridgestone atm.

Buy smarter next time.

Sadly, though, you seem to be an "appliance car" guy dating a "car guy" girl...she deserves better...upgrade yourself, learn something about higher-end cars...won't hurt you in any case.

Considering a car as just "A to B" is almost as bad in my book as looking at a bottle of wine as "just a way to get buzzed" or dare I say sex as "just a way to make a baby..."!

There is, IMHO, more to life than this, Grasshopper...
But Mitch, not everyone has oodles of money to have the opportunity to live in a Lexus commercial. "Mmmmmm yessss, please poss the crumpets"

$700 wow, I recently paid $67 out the door per tire for some very good tires for my wife's CRV. Have had them on for a year now and love thier handling in dry and wet conditions. I paid $100 a tire for tires for my Tacoma P265/70-R16's and love them. You do not need to pay $150 plus for a good tire. There are lots of good ones out there for under $100 for most common sizes.

All of you people should see my tire bill.

20" wheels with performance tires.

It hurts. Badly.

Well, they were winter tires, which are slightly more expensive. But I prefer to pay for something that I trust. I only change them out every 4 years or so anyway, so it's not like the yearly amount adds up to much.
