1984 Chevy Celebrity (yeap) 250k, 1 set of plug wires (1 set of plugs at 50K) At end, it Would only turn right when cold, but just park correctly! (steering rack)
1973 Dodge pkup w/ 360 [300k]. A timing chain ($19.) at 213,000.
vw diesel fleet over 2 mil miles, none towed home 50 mpg since 1976, no OPEC (or dinosaurs) required
I would say our 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager was the best. Totalled in an accident at 140,000 miles with no hint of trouble. Our current 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan is, to date, going just as strong at 63,000 miles.
I really have not yet had an unreliable car with the exception of an 89 Reliant.
Some outstanding ones I've had:
84 Cavalier-300K with only normal maintenance and wear items, great in snow
95 Taurus Wagon-currently 250K, replaced transmission at 120K, which was my fault, only normal items otherwise
02 Taurus Wagon-currently 150K, normal items
78 Impala-a tank
2003 Subaru Outback H6 Wagon, without a doubt the all around best vehicle I've ever driven. This thing was a tank built for all seasons and I never had any issues with it other than a burnt out tail-light and a defective radio unit (both replaced for free under warranty). Unfortunately I was in a horrible freak accident, one which I walked away from unharmed despite the vehicle being nearly destroyed. The only thing I would change on that vehicle is the automatic transmission, which wasn't the best. Since then Subaru has come out with an excellent 5EAT and an incredible CVT, I currently own a 2010 Subaru Outback with the CVT and am averaging well above 30mpg
Definitely 1993 Geo Metro. Over 150,000 miles on trade in and during my ownership I replaced one starter and had the oil changed on a regular basis. No other problems, no other repairs. I had the car for five years. It was a great little car. (two door hatchback)
I have a 1994 Olds 88 that I bought for $800 with 89,000 miles on it. It was an auction car that needed a fender and a door. It had some issues with coolant leaks and a weird fuel pump issue. After I fixed those haven't had a problem with it. It just turned 267,000 miles and I routinely get 30 mpg on the highway with it. It's got the indestructible GM 3.8(3800) motor. It needs a paint job really bad, but it's got so many miles on it I don't want to put any money into it. But if it left me walking tomorrow, I really couldn't complain since I've gotten my moneys worth out of it.
I've had a lot of cars and I have never been stranded by any of them. I've never had an unreliable car. I've had some that required more attention than others, but I wouldn't consider them "unreliable", just more needy than others.
The least needy were;
1989 S10 x-cab pickup. 115k miles. water pump, front brakes, 2 batteries, 2 sets of tires were all I replaced.
1996 Chevy Cavalier 118k miles one set of tires, great car.
A Toyota 4Runner! Fabulous car! I've owned one for 5 years and I haven't had one...I mean one problem with it. I've owned GM cars like the Envoy and it was a great ride for the first 3 years and then things fell apart. I had to replace the window motor 3 times, the brakes needed to be fixed (broken caliper),the alternator broke and it had all types of leaks. I have a Hyundai also and it's been an awesome car.
I also want to give props to Hyundai. I've had no problems with my Hyundai. It still drives like new! Even my 4Runner is as smooth and doesn't accelerate as well on the freeway like it did when I bought it but the Hyundai still drives like new. With the Hyundai, the visor fell off and I've had battery issues ( the dealer claims I had cheap batteries but i think the alternator was bad) but other than that, nothing. Highly Recommend
