We just picked up this really nice '88 Jeep Wrangler...paid $500 for it but then did $1000 worth of work doing the top end of the engine. It runs great now, but our mechanic told me that some sort of cross over tube on the exhaust is broken and you can't get them anymore. Those in wrecking yards may be in the same condition as this one...cracked and deteriorating. He rigged it as best as he could but it may not pass a smog check that way. And you KNOW how California is...lol. Any suggestions? Can a muffler shop fabricate this thing?
He also said that the air control solenoid thingy on the carburetor doesn't work right and it is disconnected at this time. He said you can't get them anymore. Now what?
Now, don't say just move from California because I have been trying that for the last couple years...lol. Getting closer...closer...
You can legally change the motor to a newer motor as long as it is kept intact with all smog equiptment.
You could install a 2000 V8.
Jeep Solutions

If a smog part is not available and the original is still attached you maybe able to get an exemption due to being unavailable. They did that yrs past...not sure of today tho.
I don't buy the whole "not available" line... that Jeep is not that old and they were built for many years and the items are also commonly found on other Jeep models.
Chrysler does not support the older models that well. If push comes to shove, you can sell the Jeep to someone out of state, and get something else. You could give the SMOG Nazis the bird by buying an older Jeep, something from the 60's, that you don't have to smog.
If I had to live in CA I would definitely drive an old 2-stroke SAAB just to give CARB the bird. And I would make it a point to put plenty of oil in the gas so it would smoke plenty...

Thanks! You can't have enough automotive connections. Long Beach isn't far...not sure about the V8 idea, though...this thing is squirrely enough!!
And no reason a muffler shop can't fix the cross over tube.
busta
Thank you Busta! The Idle Air Control Valve seems to be the right part...it sure helps to know the real names of these thingys...lol. I will show that page to my mechanic. Now the exhaust parts page doesn't seem to include the tube we need...check out these pix I took...and note the "repairs"...we will be visiting a local muffler shop and see what can be done.
And depending where you live in the Hi Dez, you might not need to smog it.
Yep, Imperial County is one such place...unfortunately, I'm in Riverside County. They can't make me smog the '81 VW Rabbit diesel, tho!
