I assume this is directed at people who drive cars / trucks and exchange the wheels, not people who drive sports cars that require low-profile tires.

I was wondering that myself, getmeoutofhere.

But, I know that since the Automotive section of C-D is filled with many non-motorheads, if figure they just do not know the difference.

And, since so many of them just bag on things they do not understand, it is becoming normal for me to get frustrated here.

When the 'experts' here are spouting nonsense it's usually best to lead with an argument like:

"If ultra low profile tires with oversized rims were really that great, wouldn't NASCAR be using them?"

Regardless of whether they're better for performance I always get a chuckle when I see a car with low profile tires pulled off to the side of the road with a blowout after hitting a pothole.

Couldn't have said it better.

Obviously the owner of said vehicle doesn't use 4X4 or doesn't know how.

But at least it's better than seeing a jacked up Monte Carlo/Regal/Cutlass/Impala/Caddy with the same big ole honkin 24's...

One of the instructors at the the track had a Dodge Ram SRT10 with low profiles. He was going pretty quick...

Great thread!

Now that is what I would call a highly debatable question!

It's all for look. Why roll like someone else when you can add your own personality to the car or truck. If you can spend $5000 to $15,000 on rims you are not worrying about ride. Some of you guys and girls may not like it,but this trend will never stop.

Car manufactors are starting to go big with low profile. Look at the new ford edge. 22 inch rims on skinny straight from the factory.

They are the dumbest looking things I've ever seen. Just goes to show the extremes you have to go to to customize a car these days. Nothing like back in the 60's. Spend thousands on wagon wheels and skinny tires along with a loud muffler. What a joke.

On a truck? Nope!

On a true sports car that can take advantage of the minor trade off in ride comfort (what's that?), they're fine, but not at the extreme.

I've seen otherwise wonderful cars where they "upgraded" to a larger aftermarket wheel and dropped to "a thin strip of black paint" for a tire. That's just sad (Unless you're in the exotics.....)

Low profile tires offer better handling. That's it. Some people like how they look too.
I use to have 235/40 R17 on my Galant, but because of low quality roads in Georgia, I switched to 225/55 R15. So I have smoother ride and less possibility to damage tire on a bump. But the handling is not as good as used to.
