Just make sure that the timing belt was changed every 60,000 miles.
It is a 1.9 liter engine.

we also had a Taurus that we logged 187k miles on it. The trans needed a rebuilt but other then that it was stone reliable. You may want to look into the GN mid sized cars. Rock solit and very reliable. Look at the Olds 88, 98, Ciera, Pontiac Bonneville, Chevy Lumina etc.

YEP... The DX version is the 1.8 L which also comes with the 4 speed automatic. The other models come with the 1.6 L and the 3 speed automatic. You are exactly right about the 5 speed manual, I wish mine was manual!

DEFINITELY! I owned a 95 Camry wagon LE V6, it was an awesome car. I sold it with 180K miles and it was still running strong. They are the most reliable Toyotas ever built in my humble opinion.

Clearly, unless you need AWD you should mainly be looking at Toyotas and Hondas.
If you need AWD--Subarus.

As for used police cars, one thing to keep in mind is that the miles on the clock tell you very little. They never turn those things off, so 88,000 miles on the road could be the equivalent of two or three times that with the engine running.

You meant Millenia.

Can you find one for $2000? If so - this is an excellent choice. I owned a 95 "S" model (Miller cycle engine) and it was excellent. One of my favorite cars.

Mitsubishi Galant is very reliable. I have this car for 5 years and it is still in perfect condition. I had more then 10 other cars in this period, but none of them were as reliable as this one.
Mercedes W124 2.6. super reliable car, does not brake down EVER! And even if does, you can drive it anyway

Wow I am loving this thread! Keep them coming. By the way, I can only drive an automatic. My roomate tried to teach me how to drive a stick on a 1999 Jeep Cherokee and I just gave up all hope lol. Thanks again for all the great post. Again, keep them coming.
