Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse for Toyota:
Quote:
Toyota Motor Corp shares fell more than 7% to $72.63 Wednesday on reports that U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood advised owners not to drive any of the millions of Toyota vehicles involved in the recent recalls. The stock, down 14% so far this year, has been reeling since the recalls were first announced. The company has started to send out a fix to the sticky pedal problem to dealers, vowing that it will remedy the unintended acceleration problem.

The US Government is clearly attacking Toyota because they want people to buy American cars.

Oh, clearly. I heard on the news this morning that this was largely in response to Toyota's, uh discrepancy in what they are saying in public ("This is what's wrong...") versus what they are saying in private ("We dunno.") to government officials.

The secretary can advise that all he wants...it won't be practical for most people to park 'em.

In that case, the Obama administration would simply be taking a leaf out of the Japanese playbook since Japan started trading with the outside world. It used to be that American cars had to be individually inspected at a cost of thousands of dollars each charged to the importer before they could be sold in Japan. There's no reason for Obama to go after Toyota in particular - people who buy Toyotas are more likely to buy other imports than purchase American cars. (And I write as a Toyota shareholder). If they wanted to go after imports, the simplest thing to do would be slap a 50% tax on imported automobiles and vehicle sub-assemblies from abroad, more or less as China does. That would mean the end of mere screwdriver plants (i.e. plants where the only value-added is vehicle assembly) Toyota, Honda and Hyundai have been building stateside, and the beginning of a full-fledged US based supplier network for foreign vehicles.

Bingo!

I don't think Toyota or any other car company, foreign or domestic, should listen to the U.S. Government. Uncle Sam, by owning large stakes in GM and Chysler, is a direct competitor in the auto business. No business lets their competitors call the shots...it'd be like WalMart telling Target what prices to charge!

The last shred of impartiality dissolved when Uncle Sam entered the car business!

He has since recanted the statement. His staff said he "clearly misspoke"

However, this is clearly proof America can't handle anything like an adult.

More ridiculous right wing conspiracy theories.

Toyota, and only Toyota, has brought this mess upon themselves. Attempts to politicize this matter are beyond sad. The evidence is there that Toyota has screwed up, yet some feel the need to blame anything except the root cause of the problem.

I have to wonder if the Japanese government threatened to boot American troops from Okinawa. Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama has been itching to do this since he took office. He appears to be angling to add Japan to China's Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere 2.0. Maybe China won't require its newest province to learn Mandarin, as a special favor to Hatoyama.

That's a head-scratching generalization. Among other things, a Japanese Prime Minister said "The American mongrel race is inferior." Does that serve as evidence of Japan's inability to handle anything as an adult?

Conspiracies are illegal. Catholics will consistently try to outlaw abortion. Liberals will consistently try to increase benefits to able-bodied individuals who don't want to work, and reduce prison sentences for felons so they can be re-directed towards more productive fields like law and medicine. No conspiracy is required for them to pursue - via completely legal political maneuvers - the things they support. And none is required to go after Toyota. This is what democracy is all about - the winners get to pursue the policies they want, completely within the law.

No, it means he's describing a mixed race group of people in what some would consider an insulting way.

An "adult" nation does not go into a pop-culture frenzy over a car recall.

An "adult" nation understands they face more risk driving with distracted drivers, impaired drivers and uninsured drivers on roads that are in generally poor condition than they do from some car's mechanical problem.

An "adult" nation can have a conversation about facts without overwhelming agenda bias.

I think we lost that ability a long time ago, and it's getting worse.
