So I'm driving along in Western Iowa today, and need some gas. I pull into a big Cenex truck stop/gas station/c-store.

I was a little surprised to pull up to a pump where you could pick what ethanol blend you wanted: E-10, E-20, E-30, E-50, E-85. One hose, 5 buttons. Take your pick.

I've never seen that before. Is that type of pump common?

Around here in Vegas, the standard gas is E10. We have a few who also sell E85, but none of those in between you listed.

sounds like a newer version of the old Sunoco "blender" pumps (Wayne model 511 pump) where you could pick your octane rating.

Here's my guess. Let's say you have a flex fuel vehicle that is equipped to run on E85, which contains 15 percent gas, 85 percent ethanol. Ethanol needs a higher combustion temperature than gasoline. If the weather is warm, your flex fuel vehicle will run fine with E85. As temperatures drop, E85 might not run the engine as well as E50. If temperatures are way below freezing and your vehicle is parked outside all the time, high mixes of corn based ethanol could be a problem.

Where's the E-0 option?

Ethanol sucks.

Over at The Gas Hole, where you can buy discount cigarettes, hard liquor and 15 minutes in a tanning bed, along with your ethanol-free gasoline.

I'ld pick E-85 and sit right there to drink it. geeeeze, No one builds a engine for this except alcohol burning race bars meant to burn this stuff.

E-10 is plenty bad enough and does 0 for ponies. Kind of like a filler, or watered down booze.
