Drive them both back to back and decide which you like best. There is no other way to really know and it is surprising how different the auto can seem as compared to press reviews.
More than once I went out for a day of test drives fully prepared after studying all the reports, only to find my conclusions were different. I was so surprised that I actually repeated a day of test drives to be sure... decisions based upon looks, statistics, and the impressions of others are often not sound.
These vehicles are both good but find the one that you like driving best.
Not quite...the current 2010 S5 is still using the older N/A 4.2L V8 rated at 340hp. The S4 currently has the S/C'd 3.0L V6 which won't make it into the S5 until the Fall in the U.S.
There is very little you can do to the 4.2L to net any meaningful performance gains short of spending a big pile of cash. The S/C'd V6 is also up in the air as it is pretty new. A pulley swap and tune does a lot for them, but the ultimate potential hasn't been realized.
In the case of the 335i, you are a set of DP's and a tune away from putting down 400whp in a lighter, more balanced vehicle.
So, again, the Audi seems to be the more popular car for regular all season duty (and IMO is a much better car overall), but the BMW is still the better performance buy when modding potential is added. Even out of the box, the 335i is just as fast if not faster than the current S/C'd S4.

Cmon, if the OP is seriously considering the A5 with its 2.0T, then the S5 and its V8 will be more than enough power for him. Who needs a *modded* 335 or S4 3.0T in ALASKA???
OP, if it were up to me I'd get the 335i Xdrive. It's streets ahead of the A5 on performance. So is the G37X, which is also AWD. However, if you're ok with the performance of the A5 2.0T, go for it or compare it to the 328i Xdrive.
the A5 is the bomb! It has much better overall fit & finish than the 335. My manager has one & he gets all kinds of compliments at the gas station or waiting for the valet. It's definitely on my short list of gotta-have vehicles. Only the new E-coupe offers anything comparable in styling but falls way short in performance & handling.
I just saw the new CTS Coupe being driven on the street and its pretty awkward looking from the rear. I can't say its attractive and I'm a fan of the CTS V Sedan.
