Not to mention Grand Ams were some of the most unreliable pieces of crap ever made.

I have been officially talked out of the Grand Am. The horse is dead. I will not buy it.

The Civic is on the list. Will go look at it today and see if they will take a slightly lower offer. Thanks to CD, I also know to inquire about the timing belts being changed.

Thank you! I was beginning to think I was crazy! Someone told me they buy up all the cheap cars and ship them to Mexico from this area. There is also an abundance of Flood Vehicles. I found a dealership that had too go to be true prices and all of their vechicles were flood vehicles (which of course they didn't tell me themselves).

Seems like Katrina, Ike, Rita, and others have left their mark on San Antonio cars.

I was looking at a Corolla that couldn't pass emissions tests in Houston (required there) and a bit later it was here in San Antonio (where they don't require emissions tests). Almost considered buying it until I found that out with a history check. Good thing too...will be moving to Houston soon!

A couple posts ago I asked about a Mazda 6.... in case anyone just checks the last page... go back a couple posts and let me know what y'all think!

I am beginning to think you are the owner of the Saturn L and trying to talk me into buying it. They are asking a lot over the KBB... as is everyone in the State of Texas.... everything is bigger in Texas, even the car prices...

But I'll contact them and see what I can see.... It is an ugly car I think, but vainity will have to take a back seat in this quest....

LOL...Yes, the Roadmaster would make a statement.

Actually, the Mazda 6 is a good, reliable car. The powertrain warranty is a good thing as well. The miles are a bit on the high side for the year, but it looks like they have taken that into account with the price. If it checks out mechanically, I'd go for it, though I'd probably count on replacing tires/brakes in the near future. The nice thing about Mazda 6 engines is that they have a timing chain, IIRC, which lasts much longer than a timing belt, so you don't have to worry whether or not the previously owned example has had the belt changed at the servicing interval as you do with other cars, such as Hondas.

The gas mileage will be a bit lower than that of say a Honda Accord, but it's still decent for the size/weight of the Mazda 6.

I wonder if the cars are shipped elsewhere, since there's a lack of good cars in your market.

The Mazda 6 is a good purchase in my eye. I drove one as a rental last year while my G35 was getting some paint work done and except for a soft suspension (compared to my car) I didn't find much to complain about for its price.

BMWGUY-
I have heard that cars are removed from this area and shipped to Mexico when they are under the $5000 range. They are in high demand there, and people don't expect Car Fax to be clean, ect. Things over that price aren't as widely in demand in Mexico. Being 3 hours from the border, this seems plausable. However, I don't know if this is credible.

Really thinking about the Mazda. Will set up a test drive tonight.

Forgot to mention, it has brand new tires, and has passed emissions tests, something that will be important for me.

I feel good that the seller will show me maintenance records...where as with the Civic, it might have gone 50K miles without so much as an oil change.

Still looking but might purchase the Mazda after tonight's test drive. I hate to act hasty, but it seems these cars only last a day here. Can't tell you how many 1 or 2 day old adds I've called about and the cars are already sold.

It's advertised for almost $9K, but he will part with it for $7,500. I'm hoping that the higher price on the add will give me a little time to think. Oh- let's hope no one calls and offers him full asking price!

New tires are great! I'd really take a chance on it, especially with the maintenance records. Perhaps people will be deterred by the mileage and price, since $9k is high for that mileage. Good luck!

If I needed a fun reliable car that still had good fuel mileage and was fun to look at and drive I would look at the 6 for sure
