Years ago I read a book about Ford and the development of the Edsel (Another multi-million dollar mistake by the geniuses who blame everything on their "overpaid" union workers), and it related a story of a slide presentation of possible names for the car that was on the drawing board.

It rolled through hundreds of names, including Citation and a couple of others that ended up being model names of Edsels, and a one point a sleepy voice in the room asked; "didn't I just see BUICK go past".

And after all of that they named it after a relative!

I think my favorite was around 1958, when Renault was producing the 4cv. It came in two colors, and the blue ones had a few extra amenities that were not included in the green ones. Hence, one could opt to buy a Blue Renault or a Green Renault. (In those days, pronounced "run-ALT" in America.) This was before they completely outdid themselves with the wonderful Dauphine.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a car called "the Cheetah" yet. Or has there been?

Perhaps in a different language naming a car after that animal would be fine. However IMO in the English language that is just not a fitting name, doesn't flow right or something... it is very lame sounding to me. Just my opinion....
