Code readers with live data are significantly more expensive than those without. What issues can the live data shed light on that the error codes don't already provide?

Not much unless you know what to do with the data you are given. A live data reader would most likely be used for tuning a car or for race/performance applications. For a normal person trying to fix their own car a standard reader is moe than enough.

Most auto part stores will scan the codes for you as well for free. No need to even buy the reader.

Live data stream gives you the opportunity to "see" the signals from the sources that the computer sees. Very helpful in diagnosing running problems, where a sensor might be "lazy", or giving signals that aren't consistent with normal paramters (which might be a sensor, grounds, or wiring issues) ... and can point a knowledgeable person towards repair strategies.

There's certainly a lot of information here of value to an owner with a "standard" car, and it doesn't have to be a modified car to benefit from the live data. There's a lot of times that a trouble code can be set where the causation is not the item(s) targeted in the trouble code, leaving you without a good path to fix the problem.
