In fact, is it even necessary for MAP sensors to be cleaned?

well on my 03 frontier and most cars as far as I know the MAF sensor is located on the throttle body, some cars air intake. This sensor uses a hot-wire sensing element to measure air entering the engine. The air passing over the hot wire causes it to cool, and the sensor converts this tempature change into a voltage signal to the PCM. The pcm in turn caculates the required fuel injector pulse width to obtain the necessary air/fuel ratio.A defective or dirty maf sensor can cause surging, stalling , rough idle and other driveability problems and cause a code to be thrown. If the wire is dirty electrical cleaner is good to clean it with, but know this the little wire your trying to clean is delicate and if you somehow damage it the sensor ain't cheap 150$'s + so be gentle, I was throwing codes, carefully removed mine, cleaned with electrical cleaner till the wire was shiny like a new dime then reinstalled, it definitely helped. Basicaly a MAP sensor is usualy checked with a vacum and it's either good or bad, a lot of times a bad vacum hose is the problem.

I clean mine every 6 months or so. It just requires unplugging the connector, removing the 2 torx bolts holding it in, and then a good few sprays of MAF cleaner. Let it dry for a few minutes, re-install. Never hurts to keep it clean.
