Just thinking about all the cellphone use and all the microwaves "out there". Could that affect the electrical systems of automobiles? Is Toyota the only major one with problems?

No, not in my opinion. Nearly all of the electronics these days on vehicles are solid state. At the worst your radio signals are interfered with.

As only an amateur mechanic, I would say no but then there is the concern in the airline industry for adverse effects of cell phones on the flight controls. Who knows.

Its not so much the flights controls as it is avionics like navigation and radios. But it seems to be mere precautions and no real documents cases of cell phones causing any sort of interference.

The elctroinc are shield for this. Now days their are so mnay electronic cotrols that they have been better and better shielded as years have gone by. mechnaical failure in accidents of older cars are still much hogher than any problems now with newer cars.
