if it were 1973 again and you were shopping for a big station wagon, and you were an avid reader of Consumer Reports, would you factor in the Plymouth's slight "edge" in gas mileage or would it be petty and trivial?
normal driving range mpg 300 mile trip mpg
Chev Impala 400: 7-15 11
Ford Country Sedan 400 7-14 12
Plymouth Custom Suburban 360 7-16 13
Olds Vista Cruiser 350 7-15 12

would it even make a difference if all things were equal(and in that particular report, everything was equal as none of the wagons stood up or fell down in any significant way)


if the Plymouth had a 400, would the mpg's drop, or might it stay the same?

i think those ranges and trip mpg for the Ford and Chev are the lowest I have seen in any CR test back then. God, for the Ford to not even be able to get to 15!!

in 1973 I doubt fuel mileage was huge concern for large station wagon buyers
I would go for a 73 455 SD trans-am

My uncle had a 73 or 74 Caprice Estate Wgn. That thing was a boat & got ****-poor mileage, but even 25 yrs later it still had plenty of torque to pass lesser cars up the Sepulveda Pass, even while loaded down with all my junk from 4 yrs of college. I don't know if 1973 was before the gas crisis or not but anyone who was buying those family haulers definitely wasn't worried about fuel economy. It's the same when ppl today buy those huge Suburban & Tahoe's. btw, did you inherit a whole stack of older CR magazines? lol

I just remembered the figures from CR. the gas shortage went from October 73 to April of 74, and then from June of 79 to August of 79(but of course cars were downsized then)

I'll take the quadrajet vehicles. If you can keep out of the secondaries a q-jet can get you TBI quality results. They arguably the best carb's ever made and I would personally have to agree.

True that. Me, if I was back in 73, NO WAY would I buy new, just NO WAY. I'd find a good low mileage '69 or '70 model car, more car for less money.

But getting back to the cars you listed originally - if for some reason I just *had* to buy new - really any of them could benefit greatly with a carb and distributor "transplant" from the boneyard, get something from late '60's to about '71 and they would get better power and MPG.

The old Quadrajet is a damn good carb, still is really. Clumsy dimwits can't deal with them, but if you can read, think, and can handle the jetting rods, etc. without bending them, and if you take care of the casting plugs on the bottom of the float bowl that just love to leak into the manifold, they will do a damn good job for you.

those cars were probably tuned for optimum mpg's. if they were neglected I'll bet that Fury wagon's mpg on a 300 mile trip(13 mpg) would drop to 12 or 11, right?

Default how do you think the mpg's were tested?

did they put a gallon of fuel in the tank and simply clock how many miles the car could go before it conked out? or did they use a more civilized method? In NY City a mile is 20 blocks, so any of those 4 wagons which averaged 7 mpg in the city technically would have travelled no more than 140 blocks(like going from Greenwich Village to Harlem) before conking out

No, not at all, the 73 and 74 model year cars were "tuned" if you want to call it that to meet the smog regs of those model years, which was accomplished mostly with higher temp thermostats (not good for power, maybe OK for MPG) retarded spark during some/most acceleration (awful for both) lower compression (ditto) in some cases restrictive exhausts as a crude EGR measure (bad) and generally rather lean mixtures (bad for power, maybe good for MPG till you got into misfire).

The Bad Old Days. I was there. I don't miss them!
