'85-'89 Volkswagen GTI
High: $5,995
Low: $4,100
Average: $4,865

Compare: 2009 Volkswagen GTI vs. 1989 Volkswagen GTI

One of the original hot hatches, an old GTI in good condition can still cost you some cash.

'85-'89 Ford Mustang 5.0

High: $48,995
Low: $1,900
Average: $7,924

Compare: 2010 Ford Mustang GT vs. 1989 Ford Mustang GT

Not just a fixture in Vanilla Ice videos, the 5.0 was a potent performer on the strip and in the skate rink parking lot.

'84-'89 C4 Corvette

High: $44,000
Low: $2,500
Average: $10,018

Compare: 2010 Chevy Corvette vs. 1989 Chevy Corvette

The fourth-gen Corvette can still be had at a decent price, not many rear-wheel-drive coupes from the era can match it.

'87-'89 Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am

High: $22,900
Low: $4,000
Average: $10,293

Unbelievably, the 1987 Trans-Am only made 210 horsepower from its Tuned Port Injection V8 engine, but it looks much faster in red.

'84-'87 Buick Grand National

High: $31,700
Low: $9,000
Average: $17,442

The Buick Grand National is the height of '80s bad-assed-ness. Your parents didn't want you to hang out with the guy that drove it.

'81-'82 DeLorean DMC-12

High: $26,900
Low: $15,998
Average: $22,572

Mr. Fusion not included, the underpowered DeLorean didn't go much past 88 mph, but that was enough.

'81-'89 Lotus Esprit

High: $41,998
Low: $16,495
Average: $23,535

The Esprit was way ahead of its time. One of the biggest Lotus cars ever looks fresh even now.

'88-'89 BMW M3

High: $65,000
Low: $14,500
Average: $24,417

Compare: 2010 BMW M3 vs. 1989 BMW M3

The E30 was the first hopped-up 3-Series that Bavaria produced. The 2.3-liter made almost 200 horsepower, fantastic for its time.

'83-'85 Ferrari 308 GTS

High: $44,950
Low: $32,900
Average: $37,878

At home in Robin's nest in Hawaii, Magnum's 308 was the real star of the show, next to Tom Selleck's mustache.

'81-'89 Porsche 911 Turbo

High: $78,500
Low: $24,900
Average: $40,669

Compare: 2009 Porsche 911 Turbo vs. 1989 Porsche 911 Turbo

They say art is timeless. The 911 is today what it was 20 years ago, the standard in sports cars.

I can't imagine paying a High of $48,995 for a 85-89 mustang unless it was super tricked but even then almost $50K for a 20 year old 5.0 is insane you could buy yourself a new 2011 with the new 411HP 5.0 in the low 30K range the old 85-89 C4 corvettes are pretty cheap but 91 was the first year for the 300HP LT1 back then the corvette was still using the L98 TPI making 240-250 horsepower which is pretty low by todays standards.
my fav car from the 1980's was the Iroc Z it looked like it was doing 100mph just sitting still it looked way better than the mustang did during that era even though the mustang GT was faster.

to bad GM did not offer the L98 with a stick shift only the 5 liter got a 5-speed manual tranny the 5.7 TPI was auto only which sucks

Don't feel bad, the 5 speed that was offered on the 305 powered F bodies was the T-5 and was not a very durable transmission.

I think my favorite 80's car has to be....

Especially the '86-'87 models.....

I really liked these. I would even buy one if I could actually find one for sale in good shape.

Mitsubishi Starion. They were turbocharged and made in the 80's. They were the predecessor to the 3000gt.

I think it would be more accurate to say it was the predecessor to the Eclipse. Anyway I had one of these in Chrysler Conquest form, the second-to-last model year with 190HP. There was a guy in town with a 944 and we would get into the occasional stoplight battle. Was always able to edge him out, though it was a tight competition considering I had 30HP on him. But his car was probably 200 pounds or so lighter.

It was a pretty decent car back in the day when I had it (mid-1990s) but I don't think I'd care to own one again. It was pretty harsh from an NVH standpoint -- they basically just took a pickup truck engine, slapped a turbo on it, and stuck it in the snout of this car. Not to mention it's hard to find one in decent running condition these days. Most of the remaining Conquest/Starion rolling chassis are basically serving as parts donors for the few that are still up and running.

I was gonna guess Dodge Charger, but they're probably closely related. It's a shame Chrylser didn't try and have the Charger compete with the Mustang or Camaro. Chargers would've been a lot better with a 360 or at least 318.

The 80s-era Charger and the Starion/Conquest (or "Starquest" as the car's devotees call it) had little to nothing in common. The Charger was FWD, the Starquest RWD. Only top-end Chargers were turbocharged while all Starquests were turbocharged. The Charger used a 2.2L engine from the Dodge K engine line while the Starquest used a 2.6L from Mitsubishi's Astron engine line, though they also used a 2.0L in Japan.

For me I have to have a Porsche 944. When I finally get some garage space that is what is going in it. I like the E30 BMW M3's but the prices are probably getting a bit much now.

I owned a 1988 5.0 LX Mustang and I'd own one again. If I could find my old one, I'd probably buy it back. I sold it in 2001 cause I was spending a fortune on maintenance and it was literally falling apart. It's probably sitting in someones front yard with grass growing up around it.
