So I found one for sale, but the owner says it needs rods replaced. Although I was wondering what other motors would fit and work with the tranny?

Also I was trying to figure out whether or not it was a sport or luxury model. So what's the difference?

I thougt the ford EXP was just a 2-door ford escort I don't think it really worth investing money into to be honest

I'm going to guess it probably only needs big-end rod bearings, not super familiar with this car but most of it's ilk you can get the oil pan off and do the deed without pulling the engine.

If you are looking for a cheap commuter car, it might work, one with a 5-speed would be at least a little entertaining.

Girlfriend from long ago had an Escort, same engine IIRC, it always amazed me how poor the MPG was (about 23 IIRC) but it didn't have much power either. She had a 4-door with automatic, so that didn't help.

If anyone has done an engine swap while retaining the original transmission, I have never heard of it. For that matter I have never heard of anyone swapping engines on these at all.

Definitely not worth an engine swap, too much work for so little value.

I am the Ford Escort expert here, so hopefully I can help. The EXP was the 2 seater version of the Ford Escort. The difference between the luxury and sport is the horsepower. The luxury has 90 and the sport has 110. They both used the same 1.9 CVH engine, but the sport was hopped up. You could used any EXP or escort engine from 1987-1990 with no problems. The 1986 and below were carburated and the 1991+ were totally different with sequential fuel injection and distributor less ignition.

Hope that helps

How much smaller are these compared to the fox body Mustangs? I've heard of some people making a backseat in these albeit cramped.

I don't have numbers, but I have ridden in the back of an LN7 (Mercury version) and in the back of those Mustangs. I would say that they are quite a bit smaller than the Mustang. This is from memory though.
